The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remaster debuts today, September 29. The new version of the cult classic game from CD Projekt RED is available as a free update for players who own the title on a supported platform. The remaster has been released on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The Witcher 3 has received plenty of changes
The biggest changes affect the visuals. On PC, path tracing was added, along with support for NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4, and Intel XeSS 2.0. Textures and models based on the The Witcher 3 HD Reworked project have also been updated, and lighting and vegetation appearance improved. CD Projekt RED didn’t stop at graphics, though. The skill system was rebuilt, combat and Geralt’s movement were improved, and new options were added to photo mode. The remaster will also get support for cross-platform mods.
New requirements for PC
With the Remaster, the game's hardware requirements have changed as well. CD Projekt RED emphasizes that the new version needs a more powerful PC than the original The Witcher 3, especially if you want to use path tracing. Fans who want to play it at 4K and 60 frames per second need to be well equipped. The devs recommend an RTX 5080 for such a setup. The developer also recommends installing the latest graphics drivers before launching the game. On PC there are technologies available that can help achieve higher frame rates. DLSS 4.5 has gained support for Ray Reconstruction, FSR 4 offers frame generation and Anti-Lag 2, and XeSS 2.0 also supports frame generation and a low-latency mode.
PS5 Pro also received upgrades
Owners of the PS5 Pro can take advantage of PSSR, VRR and uncapped framerates. Performance mode allows up to 90 frames per second on displays that support VRR.
Importantly, the update doesn't require buying the game again. If you already own The Witcher 3, you'll get the Remaster at no additional charge on the same platform.
