The PS5 Pro will feature AI generating frames. Sony is preparing a big performance boost.

Calendar 3/23/2026

Sony is preparing another major change in graphics on PlayStation. This time it concerns AI generating additional frames, which can significantly improve the smoothness of games without the need for more powerful hardware. The technology has already been confirmed, and it seems that the PS5 Pro will be the first candidate to utilize it.

AI takes a step further than upscaling

So far, Sony has primarily used AI in the PSSR technology, which enhances image sharpness. Now the company wants to go further. Frame generation works differently than classic scaling. Instead of boosting the resolution, AI creates completely new frames between those rendered, which gives the impression of a significantly higher FPS. Similar solutions are already known from PC, where technologies like DLSS or FSR operate. Sony wants to have its own version tailored for consoles.

Greater fluidity, but not without compromises

The biggest advantage is obvious: games can look like they're running at 60 or even 120 FPS, without the need to render every frame. For players, this means a smoother image, and for creators, greater freedom in enhancing the quality of graphics. More can be squeezed out of the same power. However, there is a downside. AI generating frames can introduce reaction delays, which can be felt in dynamic games.

PS5 Pro as the main candidate

Sony has not explicitly said that the feature will make it to the PS5 Pro, but everything suggests it will. The console is already using AI-based solutions and a more powerful GPU, so it has the right infrastructure. If the technology is implemented, it could prolong the life of the console and bring it closer to the level of high-end PCs. For now, however, patience is required. According to announcements, the feature may not appear for some time, possibly even closer to the next generation.

Sony clearly shows the direction AI will become the foundation of graphics in games. Frame generation is the next step after upscaling and can realistically change the way we perceive fluidity. The PS5 Pro could gain a lot from this, but we will only see the true potential of this technology in the coming years.
