The new handheld Anbernic RG Vita Pro will allow you to run PlayStation 2 games on a pocket-sized device.

New handheld for retro fans

Anbernic has announced a new portable console RG Vita Pro, which may interest fans of retro games and emulation. The device is supposed to offer enough performance to run games from consoles such as PlayStation 2 or PlayStation Vita, while still maintaining a compact size that allows it to fit in a pocket. The manufacturer has already presented the first video materials and preliminary information regarding the specifications of the device.

The heart of the console is supposed to be an octa-core Rockchip RK3576 processor, which appears for the first time in a retro device. The chip is built on an 8 nm technology and utilizes four powerful Cortex-A72 cores and four energy-efficient Cortex-A53 cores. The display is handled by a 5.5-inch IPS screen with a Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels) and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Power is provided by a 5000 mAh battery that supports fast charging at 18 W.

Android and Linux in one device

One of the biggest distinguishing features of the Pro model is support for two operating systems. The console will allow you to run both Android 14 and a 64-bit Linux distribution. According to unofficial information, the software is being developed in collaboration with the creators of the popular GammaOS, which is well-known in the retro handheld community. Such a solution could significantly improve the performance and stability of emulators.

The manufacturer promises that the device will handle the emulation of many platforms. Promotional materials showcased the operation of games from PlayStation 2 such as Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The handheld will also support games from other platforms, including Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation Portable, and Sega Dreamcast. Thanks to the Android system, running modern mobile games will also be possible.

The console is equipped with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, allowing for the connection of wireless controllers or game streaming from a computer. The device also has a USB-C port with DisplayPort support and a separate HDMI connection, so it can be directly connected to a monitor or television and used like a classic console. The Anbernic RG Vita Pro is set to be released in two color versions – black and white. The manufacturer announces that the device will launch in the near future, probably still in March. However, the price of the equipment has not yet been revealed.

The new handheld from Anbernic could be one of the more interesting suggestions for fans of emulation. The combination of a powerful processor, Android 14 and Linux, and support for many classic consoles makes the RG Vita Pro a very versatile device for playing retro titles.
