Spotify wants to make it easier for runners to choose the right music for their workouts. The company has announced a new Running Mode feature that automatically creates a playlist tailored to the planned workout. The solution uses the user's music preferences and the parameters of the chosen workout. That way you no longer have to create playlists yourself before every run. The feature was developed with Spotify Premium subscribers in mind. For now it is available only in select markets.

Running Mode creates a workout-matched playlist

The new Running Mode feature lets you prepare a workout and its accompanying playlist directly in the Spotify app. Users can set workout length, run type, music genre, and preferred song tempo. There are 25 preset workout templates to choose from, which can be further customized to suit individual needs. Available options include easy runs, interval workouts, and pyramid sessions. Spotify also offers English-language voice prompts that provide guidance and motivation during exercise. The feature is based on each user's personal music preferences, so two people choosing the same workout may receive completely different playlists. Running Mode uses Prompted Playlist technology, which analyzes listening history and the user's prompts. According to Spotify, workouts are among the most common uses of this technology. That lets the app create a playlist tailored to a specific type of physical activity. The solution is designed to provide a smooth transition from energetic tracks during the run to calmer compositions during the cool-down phase. Everything happens automatically after the workout parameters are set. Spotify hopes the feature will make it easier for users to plan activities without having to manually search for the right music.

Spotify returns to an idea from years ago

Running Mode is not Spotify's first attempt at creating a feature for runners. More than a decade ago the company offered a solution that used smartphone sensors to automatically detect running pace and select music. That feature was removed in 2018. The new Running Mode works differently and does not analyze running pace in real time. Instead, the user sets a workout plan and target pace before starting the activity. Spotify also stresses that the feature does not replace sports apps or training watches. Running Mode does not record route, distance, or other activity-related metrics. The solution is currently available only to Spotify Premium users on iOS. The feature has been launched in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden, among other places. The company has not yet said when Running Mode will arrive on Android devices or expand to other markets. However, availability may be extended in the future.
