The global market for RAM and data storage devices has been struggling for months with rising prices and availability issues. Many companies fear the situation could affect production of new electronic devices. Sony insists, however, that there is no cause for concern when it comes to the PlayStation 5. The manufacturer says it has secured sufficient memory supplies to meet its sales plans for the current fiscal year. That is particularly important ahead of the release of GTA 6, which could significantly boost interest in consoles. At the same time, the company released its latest financial results and outlined the current state of PlayStation.
Sony does not expect production problems for the PlayStation 5
In its latest financial report, Sony said it has secured a sufficient number of RAM modules to produce PlayStation 5 consoles. The company emphasized that it does not plan to change its forecasts for hardware sales or profitability in fiscal year 2026. The manufacturer did not say, however, whether this rules out further price increases for the console in the second half of the year. According to Sony, current inventory should also be enough for the holiday season and the early months of 2027. This information is particularly important ahead of the November launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, which could significantly boost interest in the PlayStation 5. At the same time, the company raised its revenue forecast by 3 percent and operating profit by 10 percent. Sony is therefore counting on better financial results despite a tougher situation in the components market. Rising memory prices are partly linked to strong demand from the artificial intelligence sector. It is unclear, however, how the situation will look after the current fiscal year ends. Meanwhile, speculation about the next generation of PlayStation consoles is growing. For now, Sony is focusing on maintaining steady production of the current model. The company assures gamers they should not worry about hardware shortages.
PS5 sales fall, but PlayStation user base keeps growing
Last quarter Sony sold 1.38 million PlayStation 5 consoles, compared with 1.56 million a year earlier. The sales drop followed an earlier $100 price increase for the console's base model. At the same time, sales of third-party games rose, while titles developed by PlayStation studios sold less well than a year ago. The company also did not disclose current sales figures for Saros or new data on Ghost of Yotei. Despite that, the number of monthly active PlayStation users increased to 125 million, two million more than a year earlier. Total PlayStation 5 sales have reached 95.3 million units. That still trails the PlayStation 4 at a comparable point in its market run. Interestingly, the share of digital sales versus physical game releases slightly fell last quarter. This happened despite earlier announcements about gradually moving away from discs for new games in the coming years. The latest figures show PlayStation remains in good financial shape despite challenges related to production costs. The upcoming release of GTA 6 could further boost interest in the console before the end of the year.
Sony reassures that it has sufficient RAM supplies for PlayStation 5 production and does not anticipate any issues with console availability before the release of GTA 6. Although hardware sales dipped slightly, the number of active PlayStation users continues to grow, and the company remains optimistic about its financial results for the current year.
