Sony has introduced another revision of the PlayStation 5 Slim, but did so with little advance notice. The changes were discovered during a teardown of the limited-edition console themed after Marvel's Wolverine. Inside was a new EDM-051 motherboard, a modified cooling system, and a more easily accessible CMOS battery.

New board and revised cooling

The most important change is the new EDM-051 motherboard design. Sony has reorganized some components and simplified the console's internal layout. They also changed the heatsink design and the way liquid metal around the APU is secured. The solution is intended to be closer in construction to what was used in the PS5 Pro. However, this does not mean the new PS5 Slim is already confirmed to run cooler or quieter. So far no comparative measurements of temperature, noise, or performance have been published, so we're mainly talking about a structural change.

The battery will be easier to replace

EDM-051 also brings a practical change from a servicing perspective. The CMOS CR2032 battery is now much easier to access, so replacing it no longer requires as much disassembly of the console as before. The HDMI retimer has also been changed; it’s the component responsible for proper signal transmission to a TV or monitor. The new revision uses a different, cheaper solution while simplifying the electronics design.

For now, not every PS5 Slim

The key caveat is that Sony has not officially announced this revision. The new EDM-051 board was found in a specific limited PS5 Slim Digital Edition that came with Marvel's Wolverine. There’s no confirmation yet that all new units available in Europe feature the same design.
