Konami and studio Screen Burn Interactive revealed further details about Silent Hill: Townfall. The upcoming installment of the cult psychological horror series will offer fresh ideas while preserving the franchise’s distinctive atmosphere. The game is set on a remote Scottish island, where fog and silence play roles as important as the monsters. The creators also chose a first-person perspective and new gameplay mechanics. In an interview they also revealed behind-the-scenes details of the game's development and the development team's inspirations. The title will arrive on PlayStation 5 in late September.

Scotland, first-person perspective (FPP) and a new device replacing the iconic radio

Silent Hill: Townfall is being developed by Scottish studio Screen Burn Interactive, known for the games Stories Untold and Observation. According to series producer Motoi Okamoto, the choice of that team was tied to their experience in creating narrative horror. The developers decided to set the action in Scotland because they know the local landscapes and atmosphere well. The dense fog common to the region naturally fits the tone of the Silent Hill series. For the first time, a full-fledged entry in the series will use a first-person perspective. The developers emphasize, however, that this decision was not inspired by the game Silent Hill: The Short Message, since both projects were developed independently of one another. An important gameplay element will be a device called the CRTV, which will replace the series' signature radio from earlier entries. The new hardware not only receives audio but also analyzes video signals and lets players use them during exploration and stealth. According to the creators, the entire game design was built around the capabilities offered by the CRTV. Analog technology will also play a key role, intended to build an atmosphere of uncertainty and unease. The developers say they placed great importance on faithfully recreating older devices and the surrounding environments. All these elements are meant to reinforce the distinctive atmosphere of psychological horror.

Multiple endings, DualSense, and a greater emphasis on atmosphere

Silent Hill: Townfall will offer several different endings based on the player's actions throughout the game. The developers stress that the ending won't be decided by a single choice made at the end. Three main endings can be unlocked during the first playthrough, while a secret ending will become available after completing the game. The title will also make use of the DualSense controller features on PlayStation 5. Adaptive triggers and haptics are meant to let players feel, among other things, the weight of weapons and the footsteps of approaching enemies. The game will also support gyroscopic controls for aiming and solving certain puzzles. According to the developers, sound will play an especially important role due to the first-person perspective and limited field of view. Players will need to listen closely to environmental sounds to detect threats hidden out of sight. The developers also promise different playstyles, allowing players to choose between combat and stealth. All of these elements aim to ensure Silent Hill: Townfall retains the atmosphere of the series' classic installments while introducing new ideas. The game's release on PlayStation 5 is set for September 24.

Silent Hill: Townfall is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing installments in the cult series. A Scottish setting, a first-person perspective, new gameplay mechanics, and extensive use of the DualSense controller's capabilities should deliver a fresh yet still faithful psychological horror experience.
