Shard Squad, an independent title from Brazilian studio The Root Studios published by Nuntius Games, has debuted on Xbox consoles and PC. The game focuses on dynamic, bullet heaven-style gameplay combined with roguelite elements and a robust team progression system. The developers hope that the release on Microsoft's platform will bring their debut title to a much wider audience.

Shard Squad focuses on dynamic gameplay and team progression

In Shard Squad, players take control of small creatures called Shards that fight off successive waves of enemies. During a run you can recruit new characters and build a team based on different combinations of abilities. Each playthrough looks a bit different thanks to randomly selected elements and the chance to experiment with over 90 relics offering unique effects. In the Xbox version all the creatures also received the Prime Evolution system, allowing progression within a single session and unlocking new appearances and stronger abilities. The developers also encourage using the synergy system, where properly combining heroes grants extra bonuses and makes it easier to survive increasingly tough encounters.

The creators wanted to build a world full of distinctive characters

The Root Studios emphasizes that it cared not only about gameplay mechanics, but also about creating a world full of vivid characters. More than 20 available Shards have their own backstories, relationships and personalities, and some of them were inspired by the pets of team members. That way players can choose favorite characters not only for their strength, but also for their looks or character. For the Brazilian developers, the Xbox launch is a particularly important event. As game director Rennan Costa says, releasing their first title on Microsoft's platform had been the team's dream for many years. Shard Squad is now available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and supports Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing players to continue gameplay across devices.

Shard Squad is out on Xbox and PC, offering a mix of dynamic roguelite gameplay with a team-building system and hero progression. For Brazilian studio The Root Studios, this is their first game and an important step in the team's development.
