At this year's Gamescom, Samsung unveiled a new generation of Odyssey monitors that could seriously surprise even the most demanding gamers. The standout is the Odyssey OLED G6, capable of reaching an astonishing 1100 Hz after dropping the resolution to HD. But that's not the only interesting model: the company also prepared new OLED monitors offering high resolution and extremely fast refresh rates. Among them are the 32-inch Odyssey OLED G8 and the ultrawide Odyssey OLED G9. All of these designs show that Samsung intends to push gaming monitor performance hard in 2027.
Samsung cranks the refresh rate up to an absurd level
Samsung used Gamescom to showcase several new Odyssey OLED monitors that are set to reach gamers in 2027. The most unusual model is the Odyssey OLED G6 G60H. The monitor uses a Fast IPS panel with 1440p resolution and by default offers a 600 Hz refresh rate. That's a figure aimed primarily at the most demanding gamers who want maximum smoothness. Samsung went even further and allows lowering the resolution to HD. In that mode the refresh rate can increase as high as 1100 Hz. That's the highest value of its kind that Samsung has shown so far in a monitor. The model also supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and is compatible with Nvidia G-Sync. However, such a high refresh rate will make sense mainly in very demanding use cases where the PC can generate a huge number of frames per second. Samsung also prepared larger models for those who value screen size and image quality. The Odyssey OLED G7 is a 42-inch curved 4K OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 165 Hz. The manufacturer used a strong 1000R curvature here, which is meant to increase immersion while gaming.
OLED G8 and G9 show Samsung isn't focused solely on 1100 Hz
The new family also includes the Odyssey OLED G8, equipped with a 32-inch 4K OLED panel. The monitor has a base refresh rate of 360 Hz, but its capabilities go beyond that. When switched to 1440p the refresh rate can increase to 520 Hz. In Full HD mode users can get up to 680 Hz. Samsung used its latest-generation QD-OLED panel with Penta Tandem technology in this model. It also uses an RGB stripe subpixel arrangement, designed to improve text sharpness, power efficiency and panel longevity. The monitor features DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 and two HDMI 2.1 ports. It also offers a USB-C with up to 98 W power delivery and a USB hub with KVM functionality. Fans of ultrawide screens may be interested in the new Odyssey OLED G9. This model offers a 49-inch panel with 5120 × 1440 resolution and a refresh rate up to 360 Hz. Like the G8, it also supports a multi mode that allows up to 720 Hz at 2560 × 720. Samsung also highlights the G9's high brightness, which can reach 1300 nits under certain measurement conditions.
At Gamescom, Samsung showed several monitors that clearly aim at the most demanding gamers. Odyssey OLED G6 G60H stands out primarily for its ability to reach 1100 Hz after switching to a lower resolution. The G8, meanwhile, offers 4K at 360 Hz and several additional modes to improve smoothness, and the ultrawide G9 can reach 720 Hz. The new models show that monitor makers are increasingly experimenting with extreme refresh rates. For now, however, the question remains how many gamers will be able to take full advantage of their potential.
