Samsung Display has taken another important step in the development of OLED screens for laptops. The new A6 factory has started mass production of panels that are expected to go primarily into future Apple MacBooks. This will be a particularly significant moment for the Cupertino company, as it marks the beginning of the Macs' transition from LCD to OLED. The first MacBook equipped with such a display could appear as early as the end of this year or in early 2027.
Samsung begins production of OLED panels specifically for Apple's future MacBooks
The new Samsung Display A6 factory started production this summer and, according to available information, was prepared primarily with Apple orders in mind. Samsung won the bid to supply panels for the first OLED MacBook, although LG Display also vied for the contract. Apple's first computer with an OLED screen could be the next-generation MacBook Pro, though there are also reports suggesting the MacBook Ultra name might be used.
Samsung plans to produce about 2 to 2.5 million OLED panels for Apple computers in 2026. The factory uses Gen 8.7 substrates sized 2250 × 2620 mm and Fine Metal Mask technology. The company does not intend to stop at the current production level. In coming years the factory's capacity will be increased, and Samsung Display wants to use the additional production space to supply OLED panels to other computer manufacturers as well.
OLED in the MacBook could greatly improve image quality and become one of Apple's best displays
The panel being prepared for the MacBook looks very promising. According to current reports, Apple plans to use Tandem OLED paired with an IGZO driver panel. This setup could enable higher brightness, perfect blacks, a variable refresh rate, and better power efficiency. The technology should also positively affect display durability. Apple may also offer a feature MacBook users have been waiting for for years, namely a touchscreen. The company has already used Tandem OLED in the iPad Pro, where the technology was presented as one of the most advanced display solutions. There are also reports that Apple is considering using the BT.2020 color space, which would offer a wider color gamut than the currently used DCI-P3, though it is not yet known whether the solution will make it into the first OLED MacBook.
Samsung increases OLED production as the entire PC market quickly switches to new displays
Factory A6 is already the third OLED Gen 8 plant to start mass production in 2026. In June the Chinese company BOE took a similar step, starting production at its B16 plant. Later this year BOE plans to increase its production capacity, and TCL CSOT may begin producing printed OLED panels at the T8 plant before its full opening planned for 2027. According to Counterpoint Research, OLED development is becoming one of the most important directions for the entire display market. About 73 percent of this year's investments in display manufacturing are expected to go to OLED, while the share of LCD fell from 32 percent in 2025 to about 24 percent in 2026. All signs point to OLED increasingly moving beyond smartphones and TVs in the coming years, reaching laptops, tablets and other devices.
Samsung Display has launched a new A6 factory that is set to play a key role in producing OLED displays for future MacBooks.
