Asobo Studio revealed new details about Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy during the latest episode of the official Xbox podcast. The developers talked about Sophia, the combat system, the game world, and the reasons they decided to change the series' established formula so significantly. The new title will retain A Plague Tale's distinctive atmosphere while offering much more action and freedom in combat. The game's release is very close, as Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy arrives on August 27.

Sophia replaces Amicia, and the series gets an entirely new combat system

After finishing work on A Plague Tale: Requiem, the team at Asobo Studio felt that Amicia and Hugo's story was complete. The developers still wanted to expand the A Plague Tale universe, though, so they started thinking about a protagonist who would let them create a more dynamic experience. They quickly settled on Sophia, who players already met in Requiem. The creators felt her personality and backstory were a great fit for a game focused more on combat. Unlike Amicia, Sophia doesn't primarily have to avoid enemies, because she can face them head-on. The heroine uses two blades, can parry attacks and perform quick dodges. Her movements are meant to be very fluid and responsive, so combat should feel more like fast-paced action games than previous entries in the series. Sophia can also use a hook, a dagger and throwable items to hurl at foes. The developers wanted to create situations in which a single heroine can take on a larger group of enemies. At the same time, Sophia isn't especially durable and can be defeated after a few heavy hits. As a result, combat is built around risk, since the player must react quickly and seize opportunities to counterattack. Asobo Studio was inspired in part by Ghost of Tsushima, but during development repeatedly tested its own solutions to tailor them to the character of Resonance.

Minotaur, Greek mythology and an increasingly darker world

One of the most distinctive elements of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will be its use of Greek mythology. Promotional materials feature, among other things, the Minotaur and a labyrinth, which has become one of the game's key motifs. Rather than faithfully retelling well-known myths, Asobo Studio uses them as a foundation for its own story. The developers wanted to combine real locations and historical events with fantastical elements. This approach is meant to make the game world feel believable, even though it includes creatures and events from legend. An important element will also be Sophia's journey through beautiful Mediterranean locations. Unlike previous entries, the beginning of the game is intended to be much more colorful and full of light. One location is Venice, which lets the player admire, among other things, the Grand Canal. The creators emphasize, however, that the beautiful surroundings are primarily there to build contrast with what Sophia will discover later. The deeper Sophia delves into the island, the more unsettling the world around her will become. Sound will also play a significant role, intended to be directly linked to the meaning of the word Resonance. Asobo Studio says that both the emotional significance of the title and its connection to sound will matter to the story. Players will find out everything at launch, which will take place on August 27.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is meant to be the most dynamic entry in the series, as Asobo Studio chose to replace stealth with a far more developed combat system. Sophia is a completely different protagonist than Amicia and was designed for fast, aggressive encounters where parries, dodges, and the smart use of available tools will matter. At the same time, the developers are not abandoning the dark atmosphere typical of A Plague Tale, but this time they build it through the contrast between beautiful, sunlit locations and increasingly unsettling events. Greek mythology, the Minotaur, the labyrinth, and the mysterious meaning of the title are also meant to set the new story apart. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will debut on August 27 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass.
