Asobo Studio doesn't intend to simply make another game in the style of A Plague Tale: Innocence and A Plague Tale: Requiem. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is meant to be much more action-oriented and focused on direct combat, while still preserving the distinctive atmosphere of the series. The developers also decided to use an entirely new setting and storyline, so the game won't be a traditional A Plague Tale 3. Sophia will be at the center of the story — a heroine who will allow the studio to show the series' world from a completely different perspective.

The developers wanted to move away from the classic A Plague Tale formula and focus on much more dynamic gameplay

After the story told in A Plague Tale: Requiem concluded, creating a direct sequel wasn't the best option for Asobo Studio. Hugo's fate led the team to consider the story from the earlier games complete, so instead of making another installment centered on the same characters they decided to look for a new direction. At the same time, the team had grown very fond of Sophia, who had previously been a supporting character. Her far more active and aggressive nature fit perfectly with the idea of a game in which combat would play a much larger role. Resonance will therefore retain the series' distinctive elements, but gameplay is set to be much more dynamic. Players will be able to use dodges, parries, and direct attacks, and will also get greater freedom of movement in the world. Sophia can, among other things, climb almost anywhere and use a grappling hook that lets her reach heights of up to 10 meters (about 33 feet). This is a big change compared to previous entries, where movement options were much more limited and often depended on specific points prepared by the developers. The change in formula also affected level design, the script, dialogue, and the way events are presented. Asobo wanted to create a story slightly lighter than before, though it will still include the series' signature dark themes, emotions, and difficult choices.

A mysterious island, a Minotaur legend and an entirely new take on the world of A Plague Tale

One of the biggest challenges during production was creating a place that had hardly existed in the series' world before. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will take players to a mysterious island inspired in part by Minoan culture. Unlike previous games, which leaned more heavily on real locations and events, this time Asobo had to design an entire civilization, its environment and the rules that govern it. On the island, Sophia will have to solve puzzles, fight enemies and uncover secrets tied to her past. An important element of the story remains the Macula, the mysterious plague known to fans of earlier installments, although this time it is presented in a new form. The creators wanted to preserve its significance within the universe while showing it from a different angle. The game will also include fragments of ancient events that will interweave with Sophia's story. On top of that, there are light-manipulation puzzles, exploration, chases and enemies that will force the player to keep moving. Despite the many changes, Asobo does not intend to abandon the series' visual identity. We'll still see the signature painterly landscapes, thick fog and striking lighting that have become one of A Plague Tale's most recognizable elements. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will debut August 27, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. Thanks to Xbox Play Anywhere, the purchase will let you play on both console and PC.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is intended to be a bold step in a new direction for the series. Asobo Studio is betting this time on dynamic combat, greater freedom to explore and a completely new heroine, while retaining the distinctive atmosphere and narrative elements of A Plague Tale. Sophia will arrive on a mysterious island inspired by Minoan culture, where she will have to uncover the secrets of her past and confront the mystery of the Macula. The game will debut August 27, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from launch.
