Razer unveiled the Prio controller designed for smartphone gaming. The device connects directly to the phone via USB-C and clips onto both sides. The biggest advantage of the controller is its foldable design, which when folded takes up roughly as much space as a credit card. Despite its compact size, Razer did not give up the classic button and analog stick layout. The controller is already available for $99.99.
Razer Prio folds down to the size of a credit card
Razer Prio was designed primarily for people who want to have a controller for their phone always with them. During play its design unfolds into two parts that attach to the sides of the smartphone. After play both parts can be folded, significantly reducing the device's footprint. The manufacturer says that when folded the Prio has a surface area similar to a credit card. Its dimensions are only about 10 to 15 mm larger in width and height than a standard card. It should be noted, however, that the controller is of course much thicker. As a result the design should be easier to store than traditional, non-folding mobile controllers. Razer lists the device's weight as 101 grams. In terms of operation the Prio does not differ much from other controllers made for smartphones. The phone is placed between the controller's two halves and the connection is made via a USB-C port. This avoids the need to use an extra cable while playing. So the biggest difference remains the design itself, which is meant to make the controller easier to transport. This is especially important for people who do not want to carry a large controller while traveling.
Classic buttons and sticks on board
Despite its compact design, the Razer Prio offers the set of elements found on larger controllers. The shell features low-profile analog sticks, a D-Pad and A/B/X/Y buttons. It also includes dual bumpers and triggers, so the user gets the full basic set for modern games. Razer used contactless sensors in the analogs. According to the manufacturer, this solution helps avoid stick drift. The controller is designed to work with both Android smartphones and iPhones. Prio uses a USB-C connection, so compatibility also depends on the phone having the appropriate port. The design aims to combine a compact, travel-friendly size with a button layout that resembles full-size controllers. The device is priced at $99.99. That's exactly the same as the Razer Kishi V3. Prio is already available in Razer's online store and via Amazon. The manufacturer therefore started selling the device immediately after its unveiling.
