The development of OLED screens is accelerating, and Samsung Display’s latest achievement could set a new standard for the entire industry. The company announced the start of shipments of panels that offer over 700 nits of sustained brightness across the entire screen. That’s a result that, until recently, was reserved mainly for LCD displays. The new panels were developed primarily for laptops, but the technologies used could find their way into other devices in the future. The manufacturer boasts not only higher brightness but also longer screen lifespan. The first computers with the new panels are set to debut in the coming months.

New OLED panels set a brightness record and receive VESA certification

Samsung Display announced the introduction of the first OLED panels meeting the requirements of the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. This means they can maintain over 700 nits of full-screen brightness and exceed 1400 nits of peak brightness when displaying small bright elements. At the same time, the displays keep an extremely low black level of 0.0005 nit. The manufacturer used a new tandem OLED design that employs two emissive layers. This approach increases light-emitting efficiency without raising power consumption. According to Samsung Display, it enables higher brightness while reducing the load on each layer of the panel. The result should also be a noticeably longer display lifespan. The company claims that in typical laptop use the new panels can offer more than twice the longevity of classic single-emissive-layer OLED designs. Full-screen brightness above 700 nits now places OLED ahead of most LCD panels used in monitors, laptops, TVs, and tablets. This is an important step for a technology that for years was criticized for lower brightness. The new achievement shows how quickly the OLED display segment is evolving and could influence the next generations of premium devices. VESA certification also confirms that this is not merely a marketing claim by the manufacturer.

Asus, Dell and MSI are already adopting new displays, and Apple may join them

Samsung Display unveiled new panels at K-Display 2026 held in Seoul. The company confirmed that the first manufacturers to use the new displays will be Asus, Dell and MSI. Lenovo's next-generation Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition was also among the first devices to receive DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. More laptops using this technology are expected from the second half of this year and into 2027. There is also industry speculation about collaboration with Apple. Earlier reports say the company is preparing its first MacBook with an OLED screen, but it has not been officially confirmed that it will use Samsung Display's new panels. There are also reports of possible support for the BT.2020 color gamut in future Apple devices, though those remain unconfirmed. If additional manufacturers decide to adopt the new panels, OLED could replace LCDs in the premium segment even faster. Higher brightness and extended lifespan remove some of the biggest limitations of the technology. Everything indicates that the coming years will be a period of very rapid development for OLED screens.
