Buying the Nvidia Shield TV is becoming increasingly difficult. The Shield TV Pro is listed by the manufacturer as unavailable, and the basic version has disappeared from Nvidia's U.S. site. However, the company says this does not mean the end of the entire line.
Nvidia Shield sold out. Company cites strong demand
According to FlatpanelsHD, availability issues affect many markets. Nvidia explains the situation by saying that the devices are sold out due to demand. The manufacturer has not announced an end to production or a discontinuation of the Shield platform. The situation is notable also because the current generation Shield TV and Shield TV Pro were refreshed back in 2019. Despite their age, the devices still receive software updates. Nvidia previously said it intends to continue supporting the platform.
New Shield? Nvidia mentioned it earlier
Empty shelves don't automatically mean a successor is coming. As FlatpanelsHD reminds us, Nvidia did acknowledge earlier this year that it had been experimenting with new Shield concepts. A potential new model could include, among other things, support for the AV1 codec, HDR10+ and newer Dolby Vision profiles. However, the company did not present a specific design or a release date. The current Shield TV Pro uses the Tegra X1+ chip, supports 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and AI-powered image upscaling. The product's official Polish page remains active.
So for now we have to wait for further information from Nvidia. Availability issues are not an official end for the Shield, but after seven years since the last refresh, questions about a new generation are increasingly natural.
