Microsoft is developing its gaming ecosystem and has just announced that Xbox Mode will be available not only on handhelds but also on classic computers with Windows 11 including laptops, PCs, and tablets.
Xbox Mode, or the console interface on PC
Xbox Mode is essentially a full-screen interface resembling a console, designed for gaming. Instead of the classic Windows desktop, you get a simplified menu, quick access to games, and a more "couch-like" experience.
This mode can be activated in several ways:
through the Xbox app
in the Game Bar settings
by using the keyboard shortcut (Win + F11)
Why Microsoft is doing this
This is not a coincidence. Microsoft is increasingly competing with Linux-based solutions like SteamOS, which offer a simpler and more "console-like" experience on PC.
Expanding Xbox Mode to more devices is an attempt to:
simplify gaming on Windows
better cater to handhelds and lower-end hardware
bring PCs closer to the experience known from consoles
What it means for gamers
If the feature makes it to the stable version of the system, Windows could become much more gamer-friendly for those using a controller or playing on TV.
It is also a signal that Microsoft wants gaming on PC to be as convenient as on a console, without the need to fiddle with system settings.
Xbox Mode is a step towards connecting the world of PC and consoles, and its expansion could change the way we use Windows for gaming.
