Insomniac Games gave a closer look at the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine during an extensive two-hour hands-on session. The game takes players to the wilds of Telambang and the streets of Madripoor, among other locations. Wolverine will have to face Bolivar Trask, his soldiers, and powerful foes. A key gameplay element will remain Logan's signature rage, which directly affects his abilities in combat. The developers also prepared plenty of exploration, secrets, extra outfits, and progression elements for the character.
Wolverine goes hunting for Trask
The story begins with scenes showing a feral, memoryless Wolverine who once again rejoins Team X. The group includes, among others, Mystique and Sabretooth, and their task is to infiltrate a facility owned by billionaire Bolivar Trask. Trask conducts brutal experiments on mutants he kidnaps, studies, and kills in the name of protecting humanity from their species. Discovering the facility’s true purpose causes Wolverine to increasingly lose control of his own rage. Logan will have to fight his way through hordes of enemies, confronting, among others, the Reavers and Omega Red. One of the mission’s main objectives is to rescue Essex, who in the past found Wolverine in his feral state. It was Essex who created Team X and wanted to build a future where mutants could live openly. The story therefore places Logan between two different visions for the future of mutants and forces him to consider who he really wants to be. The creators focus heavily on the conflict between his brutal nature and his attempt to hold on to his humanity. Everything points to the plot of Marvel’s Wolverine being much more personal than the flashy combat alone would suggest. At the center of events will be primarily Logan, his past, and his relationships with mutants who are trying to find their place in a hostile world.
Brutal combat, Logan's progression, and exploration of Madripoor
The most impressive part of the presentation was the combat system, which lets Wolverine use his claws and superhuman strength in many ways. Logan can lunge at enemies in an instant, stun them, and perform brutal attack strings. Players will also get Special Techniques, special skills that can be upgraded and mapped to the directional buttons. These include Tornado Spin and Knee Breaker, among others. The Rage Meter also plays an important role, building up as you land successful combos. As rage reaches new levels Wolverine becomes more powerful and gains access to new abilities. At the second level you unlock, among other things, Last Stand, which lets you use rage to regenerate health after a knockdown. The third level completely cranks up the pace of combat, increasing attack power and enabling brutal critical hits. Not every encounter has to be solved with brute force, though, because Wolverine can use Enhanced Senses to track enemies and take them out quietly. While exploring Madripoor you can also find hidden chests, upgrade materials, bottles of whiskey, and special Nightmare Doors that lead to timed challenges. The game will also let you discover additional outfits and claw variants, and careful exploration can lead to conversations, secrets, and easter eggs related to the Marvel Universe.
Marvel’s Wolverine looks set to be an exceptionally brutal and dynamic title, in which combat will be closely tied to Logan’s character. Insomniac Games is aiming not only for spectacular fights but also for a narrative conflict between Wolverine’s rage and his humanity. On top of that, there’s exploration of Madripoor, secrets, skill progression, various outfits, and demanding challenges. The game will debut on September 15, 2026 exclusively on PlayStation 5.
