Marathon is already on Xbox Series X|S - 10 tips for new players

Calendar 3/6/2026

The new extraction shooter Marathon from Bungie studio is now available on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles. Players land on the planet Tau Ceti IV as cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners. In the game, you can go solo, cooperate with other players, or form temporary alliances to acquire valuable gear and safely escape the map. However, the extraction mechanics mean one thing: if you die before evacuation, you lose all the gear you've collected.

Here are 10 tips to help survive your first expeditions in Marathon.

1. Noise reveals your position

In Marathon, practically every action creates sound: opening doors, looting, healing, or reloading weapons. Other players can hear your presence and set up an ambush.

2. Listen carefully to your surroundings

Sound works both ways. Often, you can hear an opponent before they come into your line of sight. Good headphones can provide a huge advantage.

3. Always take supplies

During missions, it’s hard to find ammunition and medical items. It’s better to prepare beforehand even the best weapon is useless without ammo.

4. Always plan your evacuation

Your primary goal is to reach the extraction point. Check the map and make sure you know where the nearest exit is.

5. Don’t fight every opponent

Sometimes the best decision is to avoid combat. In Marathon, surviving and extracting loot from the map is more important than eliminating opponents.

  • Try Rook mode
If you’re short on gear, you can play as Rook, a lone scavenger who joins an ongoing match. This character has a camouflage ability, making it easier to avoid enemies.

  • Complete contracts
Faction contracts help you develop your character and unlock stat bonuses. At the beginning, however, it’s best to play cautiously and learn the maps.

  • Experiment with equipment
Runners can use various implants, weapons, and modifications. It’s worth testing different setups to find the playstyle that suits your preferences best.

  • Alliances are uncertain
Sometimes it’s worth cooperating with other players, but remember—they can decide to betray you at any moment.

  • Gear is just a tool
In Marathon, loot changes frequently. It’s not worth getting attached to a single loadout—the most important things are gaining experience and improving your character.

Marathon is a dynamic extraction shooter where tactics, planning, and collaboration with other players are key. Each expedition to the planet Tau Ceti IV can yield immense rewards, but it can also result in the loss of all your gear. With these tips, new players can more easily navigate their first missions and increase their chances of a successful evacuation.
