Marvel’s Wolverine was expected to be one of the biggest hits on PlayStation 5, but early reviews show that this time Insomniac Games didn't land with everyone. On Metacritic the average currently sits around 78 points. That's still a decent score, but for the studio behind Spider-Man 2, it's clearly below expectations.
You can see it most clearly from the scores themselves. Game Informer gave the game 8.5/10 and praises above all the brutal combat, pacing, and Logan's character. Our Polish PPE gave a similar score, namely 8/10. On the other hand, IGN, GameSpot and GamesRadar stopped at 6/10. In those less enthusiastic reviews the same complaints keep coming up: the combat starts to repeat itself after a few hours, character progression is fairly shallow, and the game's structure at times feels surprisingly conservative. Wolverine is also much more linear than Spider-Man. Instead of a large open world we get a shorter adventure built around combat, cinematic sequences, and guiding the player from one scene to the next. For some it's a strength, for others a disappointment, especially if they were hoping for another big step forward after Insomniac's recent titles.
Players are also deeply divided
A similar picture appears in the comments and discussions online. Some players complain about repetition, an overly safe design, and excessive hand-holding. Others reply that this is exactly the Wolverine game they wanted: shorter, brutal, and without tens of hours of extra activities scattered across the map. So it doesn't look like Wolverine is a big flop, but compared with Insomniac's previous games it's hard to call it another hit. If anyone was hoping for a leap in quality after Spider-Man 2, they might be disappointed. If, however, they wanted a shorter, brutal action game without an open world, Wolverine may still suit their tastes.
