Google is increasingly talking about the next generation of its artificial intelligence. Although Gemini 3.5 Pro still hasn’t been rolled out to a broad user base, the company is already openly discussing work on Gemini 4. The new model is expected to be significantly larger and more advanced than its predecessors. Google representatives stress that the project is being developed to compete with the world’s best AI models. Developing Gemini 4 is currently one of the company’s top priorities. At the same time, the company says it will continue improving models in the Gemini 3.x series.
Gemini 4 is expected to be Google's most ambitious project
The first mentions of Gemini 4 emerged during the presentation of the Gemini 3.6 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber models. Google said at the time that it was simultaneously working on the next generation of its language models. According to the company, Gemini 4 will be the result of the most ambitious training process in the project's history. During Alphabet's earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai stressed that Google remains determined to stay at the forefront of AI development. He also acknowledged areas that need further improvement, including programming and so-called agentic coding. It is these areas that Google's teams are currently focusing a significant portion of their work on. The company says it wants to compete with the best models available when Gemini 4 launches.
A larger model and further updates before release
Google also revealed that Gemini 4 will be built on a significantly larger base model than current generations. According to Sundar Pichai, this is necessary to effectively compete at the highest level of AI development. The company is dedicating a substantial portion of its compute resources and TPU accelerators to developing the next-generation Gemini. At the same time, Google does not plan to slow development of existing models. Further updates to the Gemini 3.x Flash family have been announced, which are expected to arrive even on a monthly cadence. The next versions are expected to bring improvements, including in programming and agent features. Google has not yet announced an official release date for Gemini 4, but the current release schedule suggests a debut in late 2026.
Google is clearly signaling that Gemini 4 is intended to be one of the company's most important AI projects in its history. Although details remain limited, the announcements point to a larger model, extensive use of compute power, and an ambition to compete with the best AI solutions on the market.
