Final Fantasy VII Revelation is set to offer a mode on the PlayStation 5 Pro that combines high image quality with a smooth 60 frames per second. Game director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the developers will use PSSR technology for this, Sony's image reconstruction system.
Hamaguchi said that the PS5 Pro will include a mode designed to deliver 4K at 60 FPS. PSSR allows reconstructing a higher-resolution image from a lower rendering resolution, so the console’s GPU doesn’t have to render every frame natively at 4K. It’s the currently popular upscaling approach, this time in PlayStation’s implementation.
Accounts from people who had a chance to play the game's demo say it runs surprisingly well. Drops below 60 frames per second were reportedly rare, and there's still plenty of time before launch. Final Fantasy VII Revelation will debut on April 8, 2027.
The news that a game as big as FF VII Revelation runs this well may raise high hopes among console gaming fans. The title expands the library of games that natively support PSSR 2.0. PlayStation is continually developing the technology. Likely more and more new releases coming to the Japanese console will offer upscaling.
