Type-Moon has announced that Fate/Extra Record will debut worldwide on January 28, 2027. The game will be available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The title is a full remake of the 2010 Fate/Extra, the franchise's first RPG. The developers rebuilt not only the graphics and presentation but also the core gameplay system. The new version will feature a strategic Command Card Battles system based on building your own deck.

War for the Holy Grail on the Digital Moon

The story of Fate/Extra Record takes place after the discovery on the Moon of a powerful supercomputer known as the Moon Cell Automaton. The machine created the Holy Grail, an all-powerful device capable of granting any wish. That gave rise to the Moon Holy Grail War, a tournament held in the digital world of SE.RA.PH. One hundred twenty-eight participants, known as Masters, enter the conflict. Each is paired with a Servant, a hero drawn from human history. Master and Servant must cooperate to defeat the other participants and claim the Holy Grail. The main protagonist is the player, who does not remember how he ended up in the middle of the war. The player's only chance to survive is to form a contract with a Servant and join the fighting. Gathering information about opponents will be an important part of the gameplay. Learning an enemy Servant's true name is especially significant, as it can reveal their fighting style and potential weaknesses. Before decisive duels, the player will also have to explore successive sections of the Arena. Each floor contains traps and enemies whose defeat will allow the player to strengthen their own Servant. The climax will be one-on-one duels between Servants commanded by their Masters. A defeated Master loses not only the ability to continue in the tournament but also his life. The war lasts until only one participant remains.

New card-based combat system

The biggest change in Fate/Extra Record will be a completely rebuilt combat system. In the remake, battles will use configurable Command Card decks. Players will have to build their own deck, selecting different types of commands. During combat there will be three basic card types in hand. Attack cards are used to deal damage to the opponent. Guard cards increase the hero's shield and help reduce incoming damage. The third category is Skill Commands, which offer their own unique effects. The set of available commands will depend on the chosen Servant. That means an effective strategy can look completely different depending on the accompanying hero. New cards can be obtained, for example, from chests located in the Arena. Another way to expand your deck will be to defeat powerful opponents. The system is meant to encourage experimenting with different configurations. Players will need to choose actions from their hand depending on the current situation on the battlefield. The developers want to combine Fate's signature narrative with a more strategic form of combat. At the same time, the new system is intended to be more accessible to people who haven't played the original Fate/Extra. In Moon Holy Grail War, players will be able to choose one of three Servants, each with their own abilities, strengths and fighting style.

Editions and release

Fate/Extra Record will be available in standard digital editions on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Players will also be able to purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition. It will include the digital version of the game and a set of additional cosmetic outfits. The Deluxe edition will also include a special arranged soundtrack package from the original Fate/Extra. Additionally, players will receive digital versions of the artbook and soundtrack prepared for the physical Limited Edition. Type-Moon thus aims to offer both a basic version for new players and a richer set for series fans. Fate/Extra Record will be the first full return of the original RPG in such a heavily reworked form. The remake will feature updated character models and a modern presentation. The developers have also expanded the story compared to the original. The most important change, however, remains the new Command Card Battles system. The production was created with both fans of the original and newcomers to the Fate universe in mind. The release is scheduled for January 28, 2027. The game will launch on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 that day.
