Apple opts for performance instead of revolution

At WWDC 2026 Apple devoted little time to tvOS 27, but the new update brings a number of practical improvements for Apple TV 4K users. This time the company focused primarily on system speed rather than the major interface overhaul it rolled out a year earlier. The biggest change is up to 30 percent faster app launch times. Apple also improved the performance of Control Center and sped up AirPlay connections to Apple TV and HomePod speakers. New features also include smart app downloads, reduced app sizes thanks to local language packs, and expanded game controller settings. Also notable is the redesigned Podcasts app, which now supports both audio and video podcasts. Apple also released a new Apple TV Remote app for iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches.

Hi-Res Lossless, Apple Music and improved HomeKit

One of the most important additions for music fans is the introduction of Hi-Res Lossless audio support up to 24-bit/192 kHz in Apple Music on Apple TV. The system also gained AutoMix and Crossfade features that allow smooth transitions between tracks. Apple has also expanded smart home capabilities. The Home app now supports 4K camera recordings, and analysis of HomeKit Secure Video footage is performed locally using Private Cloud Compute technology. tvOS 27 also supports the Thread 1.4 standard, improving interoperability with smart home devices. The update also introduces new accessibility features, including the ability to adjust text size and automatic transcription of audio into English captions on the third-generation Apple TV 4K. The public beta of tvOS 27 is already available to users of compatible Apple TV 4K models, while the final release will be made available in the fall along with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

tvOS 27 doesn't bring a visual revolution, but focuses on improving performance and the day-to-day comfort of using Apple TV. Faster system performance, Hi-Res Lossless support, new Apple Music features, and HomeKit improvements make it one of the most practical tvOS updates in recent years.
