Apple is developing AI-based features while also looking for ways to fund their operation. During the company’s latest earnings call there were interesting remarks about the future of Siri AI. Tim Cook acknowledged that users who heavily use the new features may need a higher-tier iCloud+ plan in the future. Although details have not yet been revealed, the direction of change is becoming increasingly clear. Apple stresses that the costs associated with running artificial intelligence are significant. Apple is considering tying Siri AI to higher-tier iCloud+ plans
During a Q&A session after publishing its financial results, analysts asked Apple about the costs of supporting Siri AI. CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company is working on additional capabilities within iCloud+. He said heavy users of AI-based features may be offered the option to move to a higher subscription tier. Apple wants to use this to partially cover the infrastructure costs required to run the AI. Cook noted, however, that the company is still assessing what portion of the costs should be covered by Apple and what should fall to users. No information was given about usage limits or timelines for implementing changes. The manufacturer also did not disclose how much new subscription options might cost. Apple already has a similar solution in its lineup
Linking AI features to iCloud+ would not be entirely new for Apple. Even today, selected smart features of the Home app are available exclusively to users on the 2 TB iCloud+ plan. That means the company already has experience offering advanced features as part of higher-tier subscriptions. So far it's unclear whether the same model will be applied to Siri AI. Apple has not announced any usage limits or specific activity thresholds. No rollout schedule for possible changes has been presented either. For people already on higher iCloud+ plans, the new rules will likely not be a major issue. Users who rely only on free features, however, may encounter some restrictions in the future. Everything suggests that AI development will become increasingly tied to Apple's subscription services. At the same time, the company plans to remain flexible and monitor how users make use of the new features. Final decisions are expected to be made at a later date.
