When buying a portable power station, most people focus primarily on the battery capacity. However, it turns out that this parameter does not always reflect the actual runtime of devices. Anker argues that the overall system's energy efficiency matters far more and presents a solution designed to limit energy losses during everyday use.
Anker explains why battery capacity doesn't tell the whole story
According to Anker, many portable power stations are advertised mainly by battery capacity, but in practice the user cannot use all the stored energy. Some of it is lost in the inverter during operation and to power the device itself. The manufacturer notes that the declared efficiency is often measured at high load, where it is around 89-92%, but in everyday use the situation looks completely different. During power outages users most often plug in low-power devices such as a router, refrigerator, or a CPAP machine. In such scenarios the efficiency of many competing stations can fall even to 70-80%, which means that a large portion of the energy never reaches the connected devices. Anker emphasizes that this is why two stations with identical capacity can provide very different run times. The company believes manufacturers should more often provide data on efficiency at various load levels, not only the maximum battery capacity. That would make it easier for customers to compare units and make more informed purchasing decisions. According to the manufacturer, energy efficiency should become as important a parameter as the number of watt-hours printed on the package.
OptiSave 2.0 is designed to extend run time by up to 20%
Anker’s answer to the issue is the OptiSave 2.0 technology, which dynamically adjusts the inverter’s operation to the current power demand. When low-power devices are connected, the system reduces the inverter’s operating frequency, cutting its own power consumption. The manufacturer also implemented an intelligent standby mode that recognizes cyclic devices like refrigerators. When the compressor stops running, the station automatically reduces its own power draw, and when demand returns it quickly goes back to full operation. According to Anker, models in the S Series reach 88% efficiency at a 100 W load and up to 96% at 400 W, which is said to outperform many competing designs. The company also claims idle power draw has been reduced by up to 50%. As a result, the new technology is said to provide up to 20% longer run time than similar devices with the same battery capacity. The firm also emphasizes that the S2000 received the TÜV SÜD A+ energy efficiency certification, which serves as independent confirmation of the claimed specs. Although actual run time still depends on the types of connected devices and how they are used, Anker believes the market’s future will be based not only on larger batteries but also on higher overall system efficiency.
New information released by Anker shows that battery capacity alone is not enough to assess a portable power station’s capabilities. Energy efficiency, standby power draw and how energy is managed under light loads are becoming increasingly important. If other manufacturers follow suit, choosing the right unit may in the future be based on far more detailed parameters than just the number of watt-hours.
