Rebellion has revealed a new trailer for Alien Deathstorm, its upcoming sci-fi shooter with horror elements. The game takes the player to an extraterrestrial mining colony that has suddenly lost contact. The protagonist is not a trained soldier but an engineer sent on a rescue mission. Once there, it turns out the colony is being ravaged by a massive storm and has also been overrun by particularly dangerous creatures. The new footage shows, among other things, a segment of a reactor mission, various enemy types, and the available weapons.
A massive storm and a damaged reactor will be the biggest threats
One of the most important elements of the new trailer is the titular mega-storm, which literally tears the planet apart. The catastrophe is not merely decorative; it poses a constant and growing threat to the protagonist. The ruined environment makes movement difficult and forces the player to move cautiously around the colony. To make matters worse, numerous alien creatures hunting the survivors make the surface even more dangerous. It might seem that sheltering inside buildings would be safer. The problem is that inside enclosed spaces the aliens can become an even greater threat. The trailer shows a segment of a mission called The Reactor, which takes place roughly halfway through the game. The player's task is to reach the damaged fission reactor and restore it to working order. That requires fixing several malfunctions and visiting locations such as an underground substation and the reactor stack. Both sites are said to be full of hazards, difficult terrain, and ambushes. The objective system is also handled interestingly, since information is presented via the digital assistant Squire. The player must analyze the situation independently and decide how to tackle each problem.
Aliens hunt in packs, and the player must survive using weapons and tools
In Alien Deathstorm enemies are meant to be far more unpredictable than typical foes in classic shooters. The aliens are intelligent, hunt in groups, and can exploit the environment during attacks. Their behavior is designed to change dynamically depending on the situation and the player's approach. That means repeat runs through the same sections can play out differently. The developers also stress that the protagonist isn't a super soldier but an engineer with only basic combat training. Combat is therefore primarily a desperate struggle to survive. At Gamescom, four types of aliens were shown: Soldiers, Scuttlers, Blister Scuttlers, and Scuttler Swarms. Rebellion says more enemy types will be revealed in the future. The player will have, among other weapons, a pistol, a submachine gun, and a shotgun. While exploring, players can find blueprints that unlock weapon upgrades such as sights, stocks, barrels, and magazines. Interestingly, the parts you find can then be manufactured with a 3D printer and fitted to your gear. The engineer will also carry a signature hammer that serves both for repairs and for melee. It will be especially useful in fights against flying Scuttlers. Besides weapons, the player will also use a Geiger counter, grenades, flares, and medical injections.
Alien Deathstorm looks set to be an intense blend of sci-fi shooter, survival, and horror. A massive storm, a ruined colony, and pack-hunting aliens are meant to keep exploration constantly tense. Rebellion also emphasizes dynamic enemy behavior and the protagonist's limited abilities. The game will launch in spring 2027 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available on Game Pass from day one.
