OLED technology has long been considered one of the best solutions used in modern displays. Despite its excellent image quality, its wider adoption has been limited by high production costs. TCL CSOT worked for more than a decade on a new method of manufacturing panels, and it has just made its commercial debut. The first device to use the new solution is the Lenovo Legion R9000P laptop. The manufacturer hopes the new technology will increase the availability of OLED screens in the coming years. This could be one of the most important changes in the display market in many years.
Lenovo is the first to use Inkjet Printed OLED technology
The new Lenovo Legion R9000P is equipped with a 16-inch panel developed by TCL CSOT. The display offers a 240 Hz refresh rate and covers more than 99 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut. In terms of specifications it matches the best contemporary OLED panels. The biggest change, however, concerns the panel's production process itself. Instead of the conventional vacuum deposition of organic materials, a precise inkjet printing method known as Inkjet Printed OLED was used. This is intended to make production simpler, more efficient, and less costly. TCL CSOT also emphasizes that the new technology reduces the number of defective panels produced during manufacturing. Another advantage should be higher display brightness, which has long been one of the main challenges for OLED technology. In laptops in particular, this can translate to better image readability when working in bright environments.
Cheaper production could accelerate OLED adoption
Lenovo hasn't yet revealed the price or full specifications of the new Legion R9000P. So it's hard to judge how quickly the new technology will translate into lower prices for finished devices. If, however, Inkjet Printed OLED meets manufacturers' expectations, OLED displays could become far more affordable in the coming years. The MSI Pro Max OLED 271UPJW12 monitor already uses the new panels, showing the technology is starting to reach more device categories. TCL CSOT has been developing the solution for over ten years and is simultaneously investing in new production lines to scale up panel manufacturing. In the future the technology is expected to be used not only in laptops and monitors, but also in TVs and smartphones. That could significantly increase competition in the premium display market. If production proves efficient enough, OLED could become a real alternative to modern LCD and Mini LED screens in terms of price as well.
The debut of the first laptop with an Inkjet Printed OLED display is an important moment for the entire display industry. The new technology developed by TCL CSOT is intended to reduce production costs, improve panel brightness, and make them more widely available. If the manufacturer's claims are confirmed, in the coming years OLED could find its way into a much larger number of laptops, monitors, TVs and smartphones.
