Tired of the tangle of cables behind your TV? Nyrius has unveiled the Phoenix Prime 4K30, an affordable kit for wirelessly transmitting 4K video. The device costs just $99.99 and doesn't even require a connection to your home Wi-Fi network. Unfortunately, the low price comes with several significant compromises.

Nyrius Phoenix Prime 4K30 consists of a transmitter and receiver that let you transmit video from a laptop, set-top box, or computer directly to a TV or projector. The manufacturer offers two versions: HDMI to HDMI and USB-C to HDMI. The kit operates on 5.1 to 5.8 GHz and automatically selects one of nine transmission channels. The advertised range is up to 15 meters through obstructions and up to 45 meters in open space.

4K for $100? Not everything looks perfect

The biggest limitation of the device is that it supports 4K resolution only at 30 Hz. There's also no support for HDR, Dolby Atmos, or DTS. Transmission latency is about 90 ms, which makes the device an unattractive option for gaming.

The Phoenix Prime 4K30 can therefore work well for watching movies, giving presentations, or sending video to a projector. For demanding home theater users, however, the compromises may be too great. Still, it's a solution that could evolve into something genuinely useful in the future.
