Can an LCD TV reproduce black levels almost as well as an OLED? The TCL X11L shows it's becoming increasingly possible. During our tests the flagship MiniLED delivered impressive contrast performance, and in some scenes its black levels were virtually indistinguishable from those of OLEDs.
More than a million to one. You don't see that sort of contrast every day
The 75-inch TCL X11L we tested uses as many as 11,520 local dimming zones. Thanks to such a large number of independently controlled backlight areas, the TV can very precisely separate bright elements from a dark background.
The result? In one of the test scenes we measured a contrast of as much as 1,842,100:1. That's one of the best results we've seen in a Mini LED TV. In less complex scenes the blacks looked almost identical to those on OLEDs.
OLED-like blacks, but with enormous brightness
The most interesting aspect is the combination of deep blacks with very high brightness. In real HDR scenes we measured mostly between 2,000 and 3,000 nits, while when watching ordinary SDR content the TV averaged almost 2,000 nits. Thanks to this, the X11L also performs extremely well in bright rooms, where the high brightness helps maintain a clear, high-contrast picture.
On top of that there is excellent colour saturation thanks to SQD technology, which in our measurements provided around 89% coverage of the BT.2020 colour space.
The TCL X11L is one of the most impressive Mini LEDs we have tested to date. It does not completely remove the limitations of LCD technology, but it proves that even without an OLED panel you can achieve an incredibly spectacular picture.
