AU Optronics has presented the world's first 24″ Full HD monitor panel with a refresh rate of up to 800Hz, which is a massive leap for the esports segment. Until now, top models reached around 600Hz, so the new panel pushes the boundaries even further. Importantly, we are talking about native 1080p, not a downscaled resolution as seen in experimental 1000Hz+ monitors that operated at 720p. This means that gamers receive both high fluidity and full image quality.
800Hz is equipment for esports where every millisecond matters and the differences are truly noticeable
This high refresh rate is not for everyone – it is equipment mainly for competitive games where reaction time and maximum fluidity count. Panels of this type most often rely on TN technology, which allows for extreme Hz values at the expense of colours and contrast. Already, 500–600Hz monitors are used by professional players, so 800Hz could be the next step for the most demanding. In practice, this means even lower latency and more “responsive” controls, which can make a difference in esports.
AUO is also developing 4K 360Hz and 5K 180Hz panels, demonstrating that the market is progressing simultaneously in quality and performance
In addition to 800Hz, AUO has announced new panels: 32″ 4K 360Hz and 27″ 5K 180Hz with dual-mode settings, which allow switching to lower resolutions for higher fluidity. This shows that the monitor market is developing in two directions simultaneously: extreme fluidity for esports and high resolution with high refresh rates for more universal applications. As a result, users will be able to choose between image quality and maximum performance, depending on their needs.
800Hz is another step in the race for smoothness of image. For most, it is overkill, but for esports, it can be a real advantage.
