The premium television market has been dominated for years by the rivalry between OLED and advanced LCD screens. OLED dazzles with deep blacks and contrast, while LCD TV manufacturers continually develop new solutions to improve picture quality. TCL has decided to take another step by introducing SQD-Mini LED technology. The new C8L model aims to combine the benefits of quantum dots and Mini LED backlighting, offering high brightness and precise light control. The manufacturer hopes the new solution will allow it to compete more effectively with OLED TVs. It is one of the most advanced TCL TVs to hit the market.
SQD-Mini LED is set to combine the benefits of QLED and Mini LED
The new SQD-Mini LED technology builds on existing solutions used in LCD TVs. TCL has used enhanced quantum dots and Mini LED backlighting to improve colour reproduction, contrast and brightness control. The C8L is equipped with a TSR AiPQ processor that uses artificial intelligence to analyse the image. The system recognises displayed scenes and optimises them at the level of individual pixels, enhancing the quality of the content. The TV reaches a peak brightness of up to 6000 nits, which is one of its key strengths. The manufacturer also claims full, 100 per cent coverage of the BT.2020 colour space. Precise backlight control is handled by a system offering as many as 4032 local dimming zones. This allows bright and dark parts of the image to be controlled independently. The C8L is intended to deliver high image quality for watching films, gaming and HDR content alike.
TCL targets the premium segment and aims to compete with OLED
The new television is available in a range of sizes, from 55 to as much as 98 inches, allowing buyers to choose a suitable model for different rooms. The manufacturer emphasises that the technology used is intended as an alternative to OLED panels, which for years have been regarded as the benchmark in the premium TV segment. TCL expects that the combination of high brightness, advanced backlighting and artificial intelligence will persuade users seeking modern screens. The introduction of SQD-Mini LED also signals the direction of LCD TV development, which, thanks to successive improvements, is increasingly able to compete with OLED. The new solution could intensify competition in the high-end TV segment. It also means greater pressure on manufacturers who have been developing OLED panels for years, such as LG and Samsung. However, the final verdict on the new technology will depend on actual picture quality and head-to-head comparisons with rival models. Even now it is clear that TCL intends to make its presence felt in the top tier of the television market.
The TCL C8L with SQD-Mini LED technology is another attempt to demonstrate that modern LCD TVs can effectively compete with OLED. High brightness, thousands of local dimming zones, a wide colour gamut and support for artificial intelligence mean the new model is aimed at the most demanding users. Competition in the premium television segment looks set to become even more interesting as a result.
