Starfield on PS5: Release date, 60 FPS mode and free flight in space.

Calendar 3/18/2026

What has been speculated for months has finally become reality – one of Bethesda's biggest hits is no longer an "exclusive" for the Microsoft ecosystem. On 7 April 2026, Starfield will officially land on PlayStation 5. This is a huge move from the publisher, especially since the release on Sony's console will coincide with the launch of the largest free update to date and a new story expansion. It seems that PlayStation players will receive the game in its most refined and rich form, which Xbox fans have had to wait nearly three years for.

Bethesda squeezes the juices from DualSense and PS5 Pro

When bringing Starfield to PlayStation, the developers didn't take the easy route and decided to utilise the specific features of this console. The biggest difference will be made by the DualSense controller – the adaptive triggers will provide different resistance when shooting with various types of weapons, and the speaker in the pad will play messages from the onboard intercom or audio logs found in the game world. These are small details, but in a game of such scale, they can significantly enhance the atmosphere. Additionally, the touchpad will serve as a quick view switch and access to the map, which should facilitate navigation through the Settled Systems.

There are also very good prospects for PS5 Pro owners. The game will receive dedicated modes, including the much-anticipated Performance mode. Thanks to this, players will be able to enjoy smooth 60 frames per second while maintaining high-quality graphics. For those who prefer maximum image sharpness, a Visual mode has been prepared, offering a resolution of 4K, although at a standard of 30 frames per second.

No more boredom in space: Free flight and new DLC

Along with the release on PS5, all platforms will receive a free update called Free Lanes. This is the feature that players have longed for the most – the ability to freely fly a ship between planets within a single system. Bethesda is finally abandoning the constant jumping through loading screens, allowing for manual piloting of the vessel and encountering random encounters in space. The entire travel system is now meant to be much smoother, and exploration is set to genuinely reward our curiosity.

The completion of the whole is the paid DLC Terran Armada. This is a new story focusing on the fight against an army of advanced robots, which introduces a new star system Incursion and an additional companion. From day one on PS5, the Trackers Alliance pack will also be available, which is a series of seven standalone contracts for bounty hunters. It seems that on 7th April, Starfield will debut on PS5 as a complete product that finally fulfils most of the promises made before the game's first release 3 years ago.
