Plex has announced a huge increase in the price of the Lifetime Plex Pass subscription. From 1 July 2026, one-time access to the media server features will cost as much as $750, which is three times more than it is currently.
Plex is increasingly moving away from the one-time payment model
The Lifetime Plex Pass gives users access to features related to their own media server, including local and remote streaming or sharing the library with others. The new price represents a 200% increase compared to the current $250. By comparison, when the service launched in 2012, the Lifetime Pass cost a mere $75. Plex also openly admits that it considered completely removing the Lifetime subscription, as the company prefers a model of monthly and annual payments that ensure more stable revenue.
Company explains price increases due to rising costs and platform development
According to Plex, the new prices are intended to allow for further development of the platform and to maintain functions related to media servers. The company promises, among other things, new mobile features, transcoding improvements, IPv6 support, better library management, and enhanced sound quality. At the same time, Plex is increasingly evolving as a streaming platform offering free FAST channels, movie rentals, and social features.
Users are increasingly looking towards the competition
Many long-time Plex users are critical of the direction in which the platform is developing. The company is gradually limiting some free features and is increasingly focusing on a streaming model instead of a classic media server. This is causing some of the community to become interested in alternatives such as Jellyfin, Emby, or Kodi. At the current price of 750 dollars, purchasing a Lifetime Pass only becomes worthwhile after about 11 years compared to an annual subscription.
Plex is raising the price of the Lifetime Plex Pass to 750 dollars and admits that it has considered completely removing the one-time subscription. The company is increasingly focusing on the subscription model and the development of its own streaming platform.
