Sony will end the era of physical game releases on its consoles. The company has officially confirmed that from 2028 all new titles will be sold exclusively in digital form. This means that boxed versions of new PlayStation games will become a thing of the past. The decision fits into a trend that has been underway for several years of moving away from optical media in favour of digital distribution. For many players this will be one of the biggest changes since the launch of the first PlayStation.
Sony opts exclusively for digital distribution of games
Sony has announced that from January 2028 all new games released for PlayStation consoles will be available only in digital form. This means the end of physical disc production for new titles. The company emphasises that the decision will not affect games released before that date. Existing releases will still be available on discs and remain on sale. The change will apply only to new launches appearing after January 2028. Sony explains its decision by the growing popularity of digital purchases and changing player preferences. The company's data show that the share of digital sales has been steadily rising year on year. In 2024 the ratio of digital to physical sales was 76 to 24 per cent. A year later it was already 78 to 22 per cent. In the first quarter of 2026 as many as 85 per cent of all games sold were bought digitally. Sony believes this trend will only strengthen in the coming years. The manufacturer promises further investment in the development of the PlayStation Store and services related to digital distribution. For the games market this marks the definitive end of one of the most important eras in the history of consoles.
PlayStation 6 without a disc drive? Everything points that way
Although Sony has not yet confirmed the specifications of the next-generation console, the latest decision strongly suggests that PlayStation 6 may launch without an optical drive. Dropping discs would allow the manufacturer to reduce production costs and simplify the device's design. In recent months there has also been growing talk of rising prices for RAM and SSDs, which have a significant impact on the cost of new devices. That may be one reason why Sony is accelerating the move to full digital distribution. If the current trend continues, physical releases will become part of history, much like cassettes or music CDs once did. 2028 may prove to be the start of a new era of digital distribution on consoles.
