Apple is getting closer to the launch of the first MacBook Pros with OLED screens. A new report suggests that the production of displays has reached a key stage, allowing Apple to avoid availability issues during the debut of the M6 series.
Samsung has reached an important OLED production milestone
Samsung is responsible for the production of OLED screens for the new MacBook Pro models. According to a report, the company has already exceeded a level of 90% working panels in the production process of the new generation OLED 8.6G. This is a very important moment, as such a level is considered safe for the start of mass production in the display industry. Samsung is reportedly set to begin mass production of OLED panels as early as next month. Currently, the company has the capacity to produce around 2 million displays, which should be sufficient for the first wave of the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M6 chips. Thanks to high production efficiency, Apple is also expected to reduce losses related to defective panels and alleviate pressure to lower the prices of displays.
MacBook Pro will undergo the biggest change in years
The new models are set to feature not only OLED but also a thinner body and a new screen design with a punch-hole cutout instead of the classic notch. Leaks also mention the possibility of touchscreen support, which would be one of the biggest changes in MacBook history. The report suggests that OLED will be exclusive to models with the M6 Pro and M6 Max chips.
Cheaper configurations will continue to use earlier versions of the MacBook Pro based on the M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, allowing Apple to maintain a lower price threshold. The Chinese manufacturer BOE is also working on OLEDs for laptops, but currently, Samsung has a significant technological and production advantage. According to the report, it is the competition from BOE that may have accelerated the development of OLED technology for MacBooks.
Samsung has reached a key stage in the production of OLED screens for the new MacBook Pros with M6 chips. As a result, Apple is set to avoid issues with the launch and is preparing the biggest changes to the MacBook Pro series in many years.
