Mini LED TVs may consume less power and generate less heat in the future. Korean company DB GlobalChip has unveiled Nebula AI technology, which is designed to improve backlighting efficiency. According to the manufacturer, in internal tests the TV's operating temperature was reduced by as much as 26% and energy consumption by 5%!
DB GlobalChip is developing new Mini LED backlight driver ICs. Their key feature is the integration of a microcontroller (MCU) and a power management IC (PMIC) into a single chip. The solution also uses machine-learning algorithms designed to optimise backlight operation and reduce energy losses.
Cooler TVs and lower electricity bills?
During internal tests the manufacturer reported a 26% drop in the TV's operating temperature and a 5% reduction in energy consumption compared with solutions using traditional chipsets. It is worth noting, however, that the company did not disclose a detailed testing methodology. It is therefore unclear under what conditions these results were obtained or whether similar benefits will appear in production TVs. DB GlobalChip plans to begin testing the new chips with potential customers by the end of 2026. Commercialisation of the technology is expected in 2027.
For now it is unknown which TVs will receive Nebula AI. The Koreans intend to interest major manufacturers in the solution, including Samsung and LG.
