Sony has patented a technology that could significantly improve the smoothness of gameplay on future PlayStation consoles. The solution resembles NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation but has one interesting difference: it also uses information from the controller to predict player movements and generate additional frames.
The patent titled "Generation Super Sampling" describes a system that uses artificial intelligence to generate additional frames between those rendered by the console. This would allow an increase in perceived smoothness without the need to render every frame using traditional methods.
Will the console predict what you'll do?
The most intriguing aspect of the solution is analysing signals from the controller, such as pressed buttons or analogue stick movements. This would allow the system to predict a player's future actions and generate the corresponding frames, potentially reducing the latency associated with their creation. However, it is unclear whether the technology will actually make it into the PlayStation 6. For now it is merely a patent, and Sony has not confirmed plans to implement it or released any test results.
If the solution proves effective in practice, future consoles could deliver smoother performance without a correspondingly large increase in computing power requirements.
