Google TV is preparing another significant interface change. This summer, vertical YouTube Shorts will start to appear on the home screen of the platform. Google wants to increasingly promote short content on televisions, even though the vertical video format is primarily associated with smartphones.
Vertical Shorts will go directly to the TV's home screen
Until now, Google TV recommendations have mainly focused on films, series, and television programmes. Now the company plans to expand the home screen with short vertical video content. Initially, the feature will appear this summer in the United States and will include YouTube Shorts, but Google does not rule out future integration with TikTok or Instagram as well. This is another step showing that vertical content is increasingly entering the world of televisions. In recent years, similar moves have been made by companies such as Samsung, Netflix, and Disney+, and some manufacturers have even tried to promote special vertical televisions for watching mobile content.
Google is also adding new AI features to Google TV
Together with Shorts, Google also announced further AI features for Google TV. The platform will receive, among other things, image and video generation using the Nano Banana and Veo models. There will also be new integration capabilities with Google Photos. Users will be able to use the "Remix" feature, which will allow them to change the style of photos or the background using voice commands. Google will also add voice photo search and the Dynamic Slideshow feature, which will allow albums from Google Photos to function as a screensaver for the television. Some of the new options will require devices that support Gemini AI.
Google TV is increasingly transforming into a platform focused not only on films and series but also on short vertical content and AI features. YouTube Shorts on the main screen of the television shows that the mobile viewing style is starting to permeate the world of large screens.
