Apple and Major League Baseball are preparing a major change to the way baseball is watched on Apple Vision Pro. On 28 August the first-ever "Friday Night Baseball" broadcast in the Apple Immersive format will debut. Viewers will receive 3D imagery in 8K with a 180-degree field of view. This will allow Apple Vision Pro users to watch events from a perspective much closer to being at the stadium. The new broadcast format will be available during selected games through to the end of the regular season.
Baseball comes to Apple Immersive
The first broadcast in the new format will be the game between Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, scheduled for 28 August at 19:00 Eastern Time. Apple will use 3D video recorded in 8K resolution and a 180-degree field of view to give Apple Vision Pro users a significantly more immersive experience. Cameras will allow events to be seen from unique perspectives, including the moment of contact, spectacular plays at the outfield wall and the reactions of players and fans. The broadcast will not be limited to visuals. Apple will also provide spatial audio so that the sounds of the stadium surround the viewer. Special graphics will also appear during the games showing, among other things, line-ups and player statistics. Commentary for the inaugural broadcast will be provided by Paul Severino, Xavier Scruggs and Michelle Margaux. Viewers will also receive additional content with replays of the key moments. Importantly, breaks in play will not end the broadcast, allowing fans to continue hearing the stadium atmosphere. Full replays and highlight packages will later be available on demand in the Apple TV app on Apple Vision Pro.
September schedule for Friday Night Baseball
Apple and MLB have also scheduled further broadcasts in the Apple Immersive format. On 4 September Vision Pro users will be able to watch the Los Angeles Angels face the Pittsburgh Pirates, as well as the Detroit Tigers take on the Cleveland Guardians. On 11 September the immersive format will show the Cincinnati Reds versus the Milwaukee Brewers and the San Diego Padres against the San Francisco Giants. A week later, on 18 September, Apple will present the San Francisco Giants meeting the Los Angeles Dodgers. At the same time the Philadelphia Phillies will play the New York Mets, although that game is not marked as an Apple Immersive broadcast. The Dodgers–Giants clash looks particularly intriguing, because Shohei Ohtani and his team will be fighting for another division title. Earlier, the Milwaukee Brewers will try to hold on to the top spot in their meeting with the Cincinnati Reds, one of whose most important players is Elly De La Cruz. Meanwhile the San Diego Padres, with Fernando Tatís Jr., will be battling for a play-off place via the National League wild-card. Baseball fans in selected countries will be able to access the broadcasts directly in the Apple TV app on Apple Vision Pro. The service will be available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Apple wants to show that Apple Vision Pro can be used not only for films and games but also when watching live sport. "Friday Night Baseball" will become Apple’s first regular sports broadcast produced in the full Apple Immersive format. The combination of 3D 8K imagery, a 180-degree field of view, spatial audio and interactive graphics could significantly change the way baseball is watched. The first broadcast will take place on 28 August, with further games scheduled for September. For Apple Vision Pro owners, it will be one of the more interesting opportunities to test the headset's capabilities for sports broadcasts.
