Apple Music is starting to label music created by AI. The new system aims to increase transparency.

Calendar 3/5/2026

The streaming platform Apple Music is introducing a new solution aimed at increasing transparency in the world of music created using artificial intelligence. The company announced the Transparency Tags system, which will allow the marking of content created with the use of AI tools. The information about the change appeared in a newsletter directed to industry partners such as record labels and music distributors.

New Labels for AI-Generated Content

Transparency Tags are special metadata that will be added when uploading works to the platform. Metadata includes information describing a given piece, which may include the title of the work, the name of the album, artwork, or genre. The new Apple Music system focuses on four elements that can be created using artificial intelligence: music recording, song lyrics, cover art, music video. This will allow users and industry partners to more easily recognise whether a given piece was created with the involvement of AI.

The new labels will be added during the uploading of content to the platform. However, Apple does not intend to verify all materials independently. The company will rely on distributors and record labels, which will decide for themselves whether to label a work as containing elements created by AI. The system currently operates on an optional basis, meaning partners can choose to use it, but it is not mandatory.

The music industry is increasingly focusing on AI

The growing popularity of generative artificial intelligence is prompting streaming platforms to seek ways to organise the market. Last year, a similar initiative was announced by the platform Spotify, which is working on additional safeguards regarding AI-generated content.

The introduction of the Transparency Tags system shows that streaming platforms are beginning to take the issue of music created by artificial intelligence seriously. Apple Music aims to enhance transparency in this way and provide listeners with greater awareness of how the tracks available on the platform are created.
