Valve may have quite a problem with the price of its upcoming devices. According to the latest reports, shortages of RAM have significantly impacted production costs, which has resulted in internal price increases, particularly in the case of the Steam Machine.
RAM drives up production costs
Insider information suggests that the prices of components, especially RAM, have "shot up," which has heavily impacted more advanced Valve devices. Unlike the Steam Controller, which does not use RAM and therefore could reach the market more quickly, devices such as the Steam Machine and Steam Frame are much more dependent on the availability of components. That is precisely why the controller is debuting first; it is simply easier and cheaper to produce in the current market conditions.
Steam Machine most affected
The largest price increases are expected to concern the Steam Machine, which is the equipment awaited by the most players. Valve's internal price targets were reported to have significantly increased following a deterioration in the memory market. Additionally, there are rising transport and logistics costs, which also affect the final price for customers. As a result, the final amount may be considerably higher than originally anticipated. If the leaks are confirmed, the new Valve devices may be more expensive than many players expected. In particular, the Steam Machine may cease to be an "affordable alternative" to PCs and enter a more premium segment.
