Rebellion has revealed a new trailer for Alien Deathstorm, its upcoming sci-fi shooter with elements of horror. The game transports the player to an off-world mining colony that has suddenly lost contact. The protagonist is not a trained soldier but an engineer sent on a rescue mission. On arrival it turns out the colony is being ravaged by a massive storm and has also been overrun by particularly dangerous creatures. The new footage lets you see, among other things, a section of a mission in the reactor, various enemy types and the available weaponry.
A massive storm and a damaged reactor will be the greatest threats
One of the key elements of the new trailer is the eponymous mega storm, which literally rips the planet apart. The cataclysm is not just a background element, as it poses a constant and growing threat to the protagonist. The devastated surroundings impede movement and force the player to move cautiously through the colony. Making matters worse on the surface are numerous alien creatures hunting the survivors. It might seem safer to shelter inside buildings. The problem is that inside enclosed spaces the aliens can become an even greater danger. The trailer shows a segment of a mission called The Reactor, which takes place roughly halfway through the game. The player's objective is to reach the damaged fission reactor and bring it back online. This requires repairing several faults and visiting, among other locations, an underground substation and the reactor stack. Both sites are said to be full of hazards, difficult terrain and ambushes. The objectives system is also handled interestingly, as information is presented via the digital assistant Squire. The player must analyse the situation independently and decide how to deal with each new problem.
Aliens hunt in groups, and the player must survive using weapons and tools
In Alien Deathstorm the enemies are intended to be far less predictable than the typical foes in classic shooters. Aliens are intelligent, hunt in groups and can use the environment during attacks. Their behaviour is designed to change dynamically depending on the situation and the player's playstyle. This means that subsequent runs through the same sections can play out differently. The developers also stress that the protagonist is not a super-soldier but an engineer with only basic combat training. Combat is therefore primarily a desperate struggle to survive. At Gamescom four types of alien were showcased: Soldiers, Scuttlers, Blister Scuttlers and Scuttler Swarms. Rebellion has announced that further enemy types will be revealed in future. The player will have, among other things, a pistol, a submachine gun and a shotgun at their disposal. During exploration players will be able to find schematics that unlock weapon upgrades, such as sights, stocks, barrels and magazines. Interestingly, the parts found can then be manufactured using a 3D printer and fitted to the player's equipment. The engineer will also have his signature hammer, which will be used for both repairs and melee. It will be particularly useful in encounters with flying Scuttlers. In addition to weapons, the player will also make use of a Geiger counter, grenades, flares and healing injections.
Alien Deathstorm promises to be an intense blend of sci‑fi shooter, survival and horror. A massive storm, a ruined colony and aliens hunting in packs are set to keep exploration constantly on edge for the player. Rebellion is also emphasising dynamic enemy behaviour and the main character’s limited abilities. The game will debut in spring 2027 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available on Game Pass from day one.
