HISENSE A6N - Our verdict

5.4

Overall rating

Hisense A6N is a simple model aimed at users looking for an affordable everyday television. With its VA panel, it offers decent contrast, which works well for watching regular TV, especially in the evening when light reflections are not an issue. The digital processing also does a good job – content from terrestrial or satellite TV looks pretty good for this price range. When it comes to gaming, A6N is not bad, especially for occasional gamers. Low input lag and support for features like ALLM and VRR are nice additions that make games run smoothly with minimal delays. Dolby Vision support is another plus, although with this screen brightness, full HDR experiences are hard to come by. The VIDAA operating system is simple and runs smoothly, but it has its limitations. The number of available apps is not overwhelming – popular services like Netflix and YouTube are included, but for more niche apps, don't expect much. For those seeking greater versatility, this could be an issue. Of course, as a budget model, Hisense A6N has its drawbacks. The screen brightness is quite low, so in a brightly lit room, the picture may appear washed out. Color coverage is also not impressive – the colours are less saturated. This is most noticeable when watching high-quality HDR content (such as series or films on Netflix). For those planning to use the television as a computer monitor, it’s not the best choice either – the lack of 4:4:4 chroma support makes text less legible. Hisense A6N is a budget-friendly television that works well for everyday TV watching or occasional gaming. Its strengths, like decent contrast and smooth system operation, may satisfy less demanding users. However, for those seeking better picture quality or more advanced features, it’s worth considering other options that may offer more for just a little extra cost.

Review Hisense A6N Visibility of details in the lights

The TV is fitted with a VA panel, which offers significantly better contrast compared with IPS panels, so blacks are deeper and the picture looks more defined. On the test patterns we managed to achieve an impressive contrast ratio of around 5000:1, which translates to very good detail reproduction in dark scenes. However, due to the lack of local dimming, bear in mind that blacks in some sequences can look more navy blue than perfectly deep black. This is especially noticeable in demanding scenes, such as in the film "The Revenant". Even so, given the price of the set, the TV delivers decent black performance that will satisfy most users.

The HDR performance on A6N is unfortunately underwhelming. A peak brightness of just 250 nits doesn't allow for spectacular highlights, and HDR looks rather washed out, more like standard SDR. This won't satisfy more demanding users who want to enjoy high-quality film content. Additionally, colour gamut coverage isn't very impressive either, with DCI-P3 at 82% being a mediocre result that doesn't let you fully enjoy vibrant colours in HDR material.

Review Hisense A6N section HDR effect quality, scene “Pan”

Scene from the movie “Billy Lynn” (about 1100 nits)

Review Hisense A6N section HDR effect quality, scene “Billy Lynn”
The photos show two HDR10 movies. 'Pan' is one of the brightest productions ever made, while 'Billy Lynn' (soldier) has brightness typical of streaming (Netflix, Prime, HBO MAX). Notice the intensity of effects and detail in whites.

Since we know the TV doesn't have high brightness, it's worth checking how it copes with demanding film scenes that exceed its capabilities. The first scene from "Pan" was mastered to reach 2800 nits, and a sequence from "Billy Lynn" to 1100 nits. Overall, we're favourably impressed. The most challenging scene, although it doesn't match a reference monitor in brightness, looks really good, with details clearly rendered and the sun not washed out into a single blob. The same applies to "Billy Lynn": the intense highlights from the fireworks were rendered very well, with a noticeable interplay of lights, and the lead actor in the foreground was properly exposed. That's down to a correct implementation of dynamic tone mapping, which allowed the TV to adapt very well to the challenging scene.

HDR luminance chart:

The TV supports all common HDR formats, both static HDR10 and dynamic formats like Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Comparing the same image of a scene with horses in a clearing, the differences between static HDR10 and dynamic metadata are noticeable. With static HDR10 the image merges into a single blotch and it's hard to make out any detail. However, when switching to dynamic metadata such as Dolby Vision we notice some improvement: details are more visible and the outline of the forest appears in the background. Even so, the overall impression is still not fully satisfactory, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.

Factory color reproduction

1.9/10

In the colour reproduction category, the Hisense A6N in Filmmaker Mode leaves much to be desired. Although the mode's name suggests we should expect faithful rendering of cinematic colours, the reality is different, and the TV has considerable picture-quality issues. The problem with white balance is particularly noticeable for both HD and 4K material, with a strong bias toward blue. This results in artificial, cool tones, clearly visible in the comparison image below. The ColourChecker test further confirms these errors, which are compounded by low colour-gamut coverage.

The gamma luminance curve shows a serious problem maintaining a 2.4 target. The curve sits well below the reference value, leading to excessive image brightening and washed-out blacks. The EOTF curve for 4K material also indicates brightness issues, with a significant early overshoot caused by the TV's excessive brightening that negatively affects picture quality. This picture profile prevents fully enjoying films and requires manual adjustment.

This gallery shows how colors change after professional TV calibration. If you notice the difference, we recommend ordering this service at SkalibrujTV.com.

Color reproduction after calibration

5.7/10

Hisense A6N offers options and tools in its settings for adjusting many picture settings that we utilised. When it comes to white balance, we managed to eliminate excess blue – this effect is clearly visible in the comparison image below, where the boy in the picture almost "comes to life." A significant improvement can also be noticed in the gamma brightness characteristic – the television no longer has serious issues with excessively brightening the entire image. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for 4K materials, where the EOTF curve could not be fully corrected due to the exceptionally low brightness of this model. For HDR content, we use dynamic tone mapping, which allows for the recovery of many details despite the boosting of midtones in the image. For this television, this provides more benefits than drawbacks. The errors that are still visible in the test with the colour palette and Colour Checker for 4K content arise from low colour gamut coverage and are difficult to eliminate due to the television's characteristics. Nevertheless, the tonal quality of the image is significantly better, which is why we recommend calibrating the factory settings, which are far from ideal.

HISENSE A6N - Smoothness of tonal transitions

9.1/10

The smoothness of tonal transitions is one of this TV's strongest points. Hisense A6N handles tonal transitions very well, gradients in the image look natural and free of major artefacts. The TV has no significant issues in this area, although you can notice slight banding in bright and dark scenes. It is not pronounced enough to interfere with viewing. The smoothness of tonal transitions on the Hisense A6N is undoubtedly one of its biggest strengths.

The match photo shows how the TV smooths weak tonal transitions in low-quality video. The model photo shows how it handles upscaling of SD material.

Let's see how A6N handles low-quality sources. When it comes to smoothing tonal transitions, the lack of features for reducing posterisation or smoothing such transitions in low-quality material like television or DVD may be noticeable to more demanding viewers. As for digital processing, the model was presented correctly and the branches were free of the characteristic jaggedness. The picture has strong three-dimensional modelling and a soft look, which may appeal to viewers who prefer this kind of image style.

The 60 Hz panel in Hisense A6N will probably satisfy people who like watching movies, because the TV offers an "ultra motion smoothing" feature that lets you adjust the image's judder, making it more choppy or smoother, with a soap‑opera effect. When it comes to motion blur, it’s rather average; there’s quite noticeable smearing, especially on dark backgrounds, which is a fairly typical trait for this class of TVs.

Hisense A6N is a TV that will likely appeal to casual gamers, mainly because of its 60 Hz panel, which may not satisfy more demanding users. Still, it offers a few features that can make gaming more enjoyable. The TV supports ALLM (automatic low latency mode), VRR (variable refresh rate) and Dolby Vision, allowing for better picture quality and smoother motion in games that support those technologies. What's more, the low input lag means in-game reactions are quick, which is crucial, especially in fast-paced titles. Thanks to these features, although the TV is not an ideal choice for demanding gamers, it offers solid support for those who value comfortable gaming without complicated settings. It's an ideal solution for people who want to enjoy gaming without heavy hardware requirements, while still having access to modern technologies that improve the gaming experience.

HISENSE A6N - Input lag

9.9/10

Hisense A6N achieves an impressive input lag of 12 to 14 ms, which is an excellent result. The Dolby Vision implementation also deserves praise. With some other brands it can often be problematic and unplayable, but here it runs smoothly and without noticeable delays, which is a big plus for fans of fast-paced games.

Review Hisense A6N section Computer compatibility, font readability test

The Hisense A6N TV is unfortunately not suitable for use with a computer. Lack of support for chroma 4:4:4 makes fonts completely blurry and unreadable, which makes using the TV as a monitor very difficult. This definitely rules out this model as an option for people looking for a TV to use with a PC.

HISENSE A6N - Viewing angles

3.4/10

Brightness drop at an angle of 45 degrees: 73%

Unfortunately, the viewing angles on the Hisense A6N are poor, which is typical for VA panels. When watching from a wider angle the picture quickly loses quality, with colours fading and contrast dropping significantly. You get the best visual experience when sitting straight in front of the TV, because even a small shift to the side leads to poorer colour and contrast reproduction. This limitation can be significant in larger rooms where viewers sit at different angles to the screen.

The satin panel suppresses reflections well, however a brightness of 220 cd/m² is not sufficient for the TV to effectively cut through strong external light. In bright rooms or with a lot of daylight the picture may appear less vivid, which limits comfortable viewing in those conditions.

The Hisense 50A6N offers HDR support, including Dolby Vision, which significantly impacts the depth and contrast of colours. Although it does not reach impressive brightness values, it is still sufficient for displaying films in well-lit rooms. Therefore, with appropriate HDR content, the A6N Hisense screen provides a more realistic image, which can be a plus for those who value detail.

In the Hisense 50A6N test, it performed averagely in terms of motion blur, which is visible in dynamic scenes, especially in sports and games. The lack of motion blur reduction features may be noticeable if you watch high-paced content. However, if the A6N Hisense is prioritized for everyday use rather than extreme gaming, this aspect may be less significant.

The Hisense 43A6N test shows weaknesses at wide viewing angles, which may affect picture quality when watching from the side. A drop in brightness is noticeable in TV tests, which is typical for LCD screens, but the Hisense A6N test in this category does not stand out from the competition.

Hisense A6N vs Competition – What Sets This Model Apart?

The Hisense A6N is a budget TV that stands out with good picture quality. Compared to other models, it offers a VA panel that provides better contrast and deeper blacks. Support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision allows for realistic colour reproduction. Importantly, the low input lag makes this model suitable for gaming as well. Despite some limitations indicated by the Hisense 50A6N test, such as moderate brightness, it offers a solid price-to-performance ratio in its price category. It’s worth checking Hisense 58A6N reviews to see how it compares to the competition.

What Accessories Should You Buy for Hisense A6NQ?

To fully utilize the capabilities of the Hisense A6N, it’s worth getting a soundbar to improve audio quality. A useful addition may also be a wireless keyboard for managing Smart TV features. Those watching films on the Hisense A6NQ in bright rooms will appreciate blackout curtains, which will minimize reflections on the screen.

Mounting Hisense A6N – On a Stand or on the Wall?

The mounting of the Hisense A6N depends on user preferences. The standard stand allows for quick placement of the TV on furniture, while wall mounting saves space and gives a modern look to the interior. The TV supports VESA mounts, making it safe to hang. In reviews, such as the Hisense A6N test, attention is drawn to the convenience of both solutions, although wall mounting requires a suitable bracket adapted to the weight and dimensions of the device.

Is Hisense A6N Suitable for the Office?

The Hisense A6N can be used in an office, although it is not its main purpose. The large screen is suitable for presentations and video conferences, but the lack of support for chroma 4:4:4 may affect text readability. Nonetheless, the Hisense 43A6N test shows that in multimedia applications, the TV performs well. Additionally, with picture modes improving contrast and colours, it can be useful for displaying graphics and video materials.
