Can an LCD TV display black almost as well as an OLED? The TCL X11L shows this is becoming increasingly possible. In our tests the flagship MiniLED delivered impressive contrast performance, and in some scenes its blacks were practically indistinguishable from those of OLEDs.
More than a million to one. You don't see that sort of contrast every day
The 75-inch TCL X11L we tested uses as many as 11,520 local dimming zones. Thanks to that many independently controlled backlight zones, the TV can very precisely separate bright elements from a dark background.
Result? In one test scene we measured a contrast of as much as 1,842,100:1. That's one of the best results we've achieved with a Mini LED TV. In less complex scenes the blacks looked almost identical to OLEDs.
Black levels like OLED, but with enormous brightness
The most interesting thing, though, is the combination of deep black with very high brightness. In real HDR scenes we measured mostly between 2,000 and 3,000 nits, while when watching regular SDR content the TV reached on average nearly 2,000 nits. That makes the X11L great for bright rooms too, where the high brightness helps keep the picture clear and contrasty.
There’s also excellent colour saturation thanks to SQD technology, which in our measurements delivered about 89% coverage of the BT.2020 colour space.
The TCL X11L is one of the most impressive Mini LEDs we’ve tested to date. It doesn’t completely remove the limitations of LCD technology, but it shows that even without an OLED panel you can achieve a strikingly spectacular image.
