The first 800Hz 1080p monitor from AUO is a new level for esports and extremely smooth gameplay.

AU Optronics has presented the world's first 24" Full HD monitor panel with a refresh rate of up to 800Hz, which is a massive leap for the esports segment. Until now, top models have reached around 600Hz, so the new panel pushes the boundaries even further. Importantly, we're talking about native 1080p, not a reduced resolution as seen in experimental 1000Hz+ monitors that operated at 720p. This means gamers get both high smoothness and full image quality.

800Hz is gear for esports where every millisecond matters and the differences are truly noticeable

Such high refresh rates aren't for everyone – this gear is primarily aimed at competitive gaming, where reaction time and maximum smoothness are crucial. Panels of this type most often use TN technology, which allows for extreme Hz values at the expense of colour and contrast. Already, monitors with 500–600Hz are being used by professional players, so 800Hz could be the next step for the most demanding. In practice, this means even lower latency and more 'responsive' controls, which can make a difference in esports.

AUO is also developing 4K 360Hz and 5K 180Hz panels, showing that the market is moving towards both quality and performance

In addition to the 800Hz, AUO has announced new panels: 32″ 4K 360Hz and 27″ 5K 180Hz with dual-mode options, allowing users to switch to lower resolutions for higher fluidity. This demonstrates that the monitor market is developing in two directions simultaneously: extreme fluidity for esports and high resolution with high refresh rates for more versatile applications. As a result, users will be able to choose between image quality and maximum performance, depending on their needs.

800Hz is another step in the race for smoothness of image. For most, it's overkill, but for esports, it could be a real advantage.
