Shard Squad has launched on Xbox consoles and PC. The indie title comes from Brazilian studio The Root Studios and is published by Nuntius Games. The game focuses on fast-paced bullet heaven gameplay, combined with roguelite elements and an extensive team progression system. The developers hope that releasing on Microsoft's platform will help their first title reach a much wider audience.
Shard Squad emphasises dynamic gameplay and team progression
In Shard Squad, players take control of small creatures called Shards that fight successive waves of enemies. During a run you can recruit new characters and build a team based on different combinations of abilities. Each run plays out a little differently thanks to randomly selected elements and the chance to experiment with over 90 relics offering unique effects. In the Xbox version all the creatures also received a Prime Evolution system, allowing progression within a single session and the unlocking of new looks and stronger abilities. The developers also encourage using the synergy system, where the right combinations of heroes grant extra bonuses and make it easier to survive increasingly tough encounters.
The creators wanted to build a world full of distinctive characters
The Root Studios emphasises that it cared not only about gameplay mechanics but also about creating a world full of distinctive characters. More than 20 available Shards have their own backstories, relationships and personalities, and some were inspired by animals belonging to team members. This lets players pick their favourite characters not only for their strength but also for their appearance or personality. For the Brazilian developers, the Xbox launch is a particularly important event. As the game's director Rennan Costa admits, releasing their first title on Microsoft's platform had been the team's dream for many years. Shard Squad is already available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and supports Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing players to continue their progress across different devices.
