Samsung has finally responded to the rather unconventional LG StanbyME television. In South Korea, the new Moving Style Edge — Samsung's new smart TV with a vertical stand that can be placed practically anywhere in the home — has just launched. Sounds familiar? Yes, it's a very similar approach to what LG showcased at the end of 2023.
Television on a stand? Yes, but Samsung style
Unlike LG, which built a separate screen for StanbyME, Samsung decided to take a shortcut: they took their Smart Monitor M7 and made a new, dedicated stand for it.
This stand is 81 cm tall, which according to the company is enough to comfortably watch something from the sofa, desk, chair, or even the floor if someone prefers. The monitor itself is 32 inches, which is larger than LG's 27-inch screen. It features 4K, 300 nits brightness, and 60 Hz, making it fine for YouTube, Netflix, and daily use, but let's not kid ourselves – it's not OLED.
Two models, several colours and one common gimmick
Samsung offers two variants:
Moving Edge Standard – with an “L” shaped base, for 879,000 won (approx. 479 pounds)
Moving Edge Lite – with a simpler “I” shaped base, for 839,000 won (approx. 455 pounds)
Both stands are adjustable and allow for pivoting the screen vertically/horizontally, so if someone enjoys TikTok or vertical Reels – they will be pleased. Fun fact: the screen can be detached and replaced with another Samsung Smart Monitor – up to 55 inches.
In addition, there is a wide selection of colours – for both the screen and the stand – as well as optional shelves mounted at the base.
System? Tizen. Touch? No. Battery? Nope.
The television runs on Tizen, so it has all the streaming apps and integration with SmartThings. Inside: Wi-Fi 5, HDMI, USB, 10W speakers. But – and here's an important caveat – this is not a tablet. Unlike StanbyME 2 from LG, Samsung's screen:
does not have touch
does not work without a cable
does not have a battery
So you can't set it up on the balcony and watch a movie on a deck chair unless you're dragging an extension cord.
Samsung is also launching the “Moving Style 202” campaign with the slogan “Connect freely, create your way”. There are supposed to be as many as 202 possible combinations when considering variations of screens, colours, and stands. To kick things off, the company will give away 70 televisions to creators in Korea, who will demonstrate how to use this device in various contexts – both home and a bit more “for show”.
So far, there's no info about the premiere outside Korea, but considering that StanbyME and StanbyME 2 are globally available, the chance for export is quite high.
