YouTube is testing AI in Shorts. Now you can create a new video based on someone else's video.

Calendar 3/2/2026

YouTube is launching a new test within Shorts that could significantly change the way short videos are created. The platform is testing AI-based features that allow the transformation of others' Shorts into entirely new content without traditional editing. For now, the tools are being rolled out to a small group of creators (English language), but the direction is clear: more generative AI in the content creation process.

“Reimagine” one shot, a completely new video

The most interesting option in the test is the Reimagine feature. It allows you to select a single frame from an existing Short and, using prompts, transform it into a completely new film. The creator can use suggested or their own text commands and can additionally upload up to two reference images to help the AI generate the final effect. In practice, this means the ability to build alternative versions of a scene, change the style, mood, or surroundings without needing to record everything from scratch. This is a significant enhancement of the previous Remix function, which was mainly focused on the classic “building on someone else's material.”

“Add object” adding elements to the scene

The second tested option is Add object. This function allows you to insert new objects into the scene from the original Short (up to 8 seconds of footage) using text prompts. This could mean, for example, adding a specific item to the background, modifying the surroundings, or visually “enhancing” the scene. It’s another step towards video editing that is more based on descriptions rather than manual cutting.

What about creators' rights?

YouTube emphasises that every Short created using these tools will still contain a link to the original material. Creators can also opt-out of sharing their Shorts for such remixes. However, there’s a catch: disabling this option blocks not only the new AI features but also the traditional Remix. The platform is clearly leaning towards a model of co-creating content this time with generative artificial intelligence in the background.
