Metro 2039 has been officially revealed and it seems that the creators from 4A Games are returning to what fans loved most - the claustrophobic tunnels of the Moscow metro and the heavy post-apocalyptic atmosphere.
Return to Moscow and a new hero
After a more open world in Metro Exodus, the new installment returns to the underground. This time, we will take on the role of The Stranger, the first fully voiced hero in the series. The story is said to be even darker and more personal, and the game world depicts a metro ruled by a brutal regime. The creators clearly emphasise that they do not want to create "attractions" from the post-apocalypse; instead, they focus on the consequences of human decisions and a heavy atmosphere.
Gameplay is still tactical and demanding
The first snippets of gameplay showcase well-known elements of the series—hand-crafted weapons, limited resources, and tension in every fight. Weapons can jam, ammunition is precious, and decisions in combat matter. Familiar monsters like the Nosalis emerge, and encounters with them require cunning, not just reflexes. This isn't your typical shooter; it's more about survival than fast-paced action.
World Full of Stories and Emotions
One of the most interesting elements is the so-called "environmental storytelling". Each location is meant to tell its own story through details of objects, the layout of rooms, or traces left by people. Importantly, the game is also strongly inspired by real events and the experiences of its creators, particularly related to the war in Ukraine. This adds even greater authenticity and emotional weight to the narrative.
Metro 2039 looks like a return to the atmospheric roots of the series with an even greater emphasis on story, realism, and emotions.
