Roku has been sued in a class action lawsuit in California. The company is accused of releasing faulty system updates that were causing serious operational issues with Smart TVs, and in some cases, completely rendering them inoperable.

Defective updates were damaging Roku and TCL televisions

The lawsuit includes Roku Select Series, Plus Series televisions, and TCL models from series 3, 4, 5, and 6 operating on the Roku TV platform. According to the allegations, system updates were causing, among other issues, black screens, device freezes, and a complete inability to use the television. Lawyers representing users claim that the updates "materially degraded the performance of the devices," and some televisions were virtually "bricked." According to the lawsuit, users repeatedly reported problems with system functionality to Roku. However, the company allegedly failed to provide an effective solution or adequate technical support. Now consumers are seeking damages and a court order compelling Roku to fix the issues. The lawsuit also includes TTE Technology, which is responsible for TCL North America's operations.

This is another lawsuit against Smart TV platforms

The Case of the Year emerges shortly after a similar lawsuit against Amazon regarding older Fire TV devices. More and more users are noticing that modern televisions and streaming devices are highly dependent on system updates and manufacturer support. Software issues are starting to become one of the biggest challenges in the Smart TV market, particularly for devices that operate for many years after purchase.

Roku and TCL are facing a class action lawsuit regarding faulty Smart TV updates. Users claim that some televisions have been practically rendered useless due to issues with the Roku TV system.
